The dilemma

So, to buy one gar and see if we like it? Or buy two so we can avoid the “I don’t want to smoke the last one” syndrome a little longer?

Buying a 5-pack of a new gar can cause us to have a lot of gars we don’t want to smoke. If we don’t like em do we want to give them to our buddy?
Probably not.

Sometimes we need to smoke a few of a new gar to try it with different pairings. Espresso? Single malt? Brandy? That’s 3 right there! But buying 3 singles at the shop is not a very cost effective way to go…
So, How do YOU deal with this ever present challenge?

Re: The dilemma

Totally depends on the price. I'll buy one $7 or up stick at a B&M to try, or if the deal is good enough it'll be a 5er off of Cbid.

There are very few cigars that I hate, so I keep a stash of cigars that I'll smoke if I'm in the mood for a cigar, but not in the mood or don't have the time for a really nice one.

Re: The dilemma

I buy one and smoke it. If I lied it, I'll buy another one and smoke it sometime soon. If I like it, I'll consider a 5-er off of CI or JR or whatever. If I dislike the second one or the first one, I won't try any more for a while. If I disliked both, it's done.

Re: The dilemma

When I first see a cigar i think im gonna like I read all the reviews I can find, so i'm pretty sure i know if im gonna like it before i even buy one.

Then i buy a single to try, and if it's good i hit up a 5er.

I use to do the same thing too, But none of them were as good as they described, so now it is trial and error.

Re: The dilemma

Must take a "review" with a grain (OK, a lb.) of salt.

If a cigar must be paired with something, I would throw out into the street. The only thing I pair a cigar with is water. Why waste good Scotch?

I will buy one cigar at the B&M, and smoke it there, if I like it, I'll buy two more and place them in my humidor for a week and for two weeks. Only then do I start thinking about a 5Pk. from on line.

Re: The dilemma

I think as long as you are buying fivers of reasonably reputable cigars its no big deal if you dont like it. If you hand a friend a Fuente or Padron and you say "Try this and let me know what you think." thats not quite the same as handing someone a Joe's backroom special and sending them on their way.

Re: The dilemma

I agree with all of the above, 5er if the price is right, or it's a reputable brand. Worst comes to worst you can hand your friends some cigars that most people like - better for you any ways then you can keep the ones you like!

Re: The dilemma

I have been pretty on lately on trying something new. There are only a few bad sticks that I have ever had and had to put down cause i did not enjoy it. For me I stick with the names people hear rave about. I have not really ventured off into unknown or local brands so much.

Re: The dilemma

I usually do the single, or up to three thing from my BM. Fivers online aren't much of a deal, if I factor in shipping, so I generally order 3-5 fivers at a roll to mitigate that. I will typically allow everything at least a week in my humi before I spark it. (Recall my cracking spree thread?) Anyway, once a stick makes it past the single test, I move on to a fiver. That lot, once passed, I move onto a box. I rarely smoke up the entire fiver. One or two will stay in the deep recesses of the humi for a little age... at least until I see ample plumage.

Re: The dilemma

I'm out of work and can't afford to be buying several sticks at B&M prices to decide if I like em. I have experience from smoking years ago as far as what I know I like. If there's something I'm interested in...5 Pack Frenzy and Create a Sampler at Famous are my bestestest friends. I'll just put together what I want so that it doesn't cost me anything...
