Re: Stocking UP....and the SCHIP tax...

I just bought a 300-ct humidor. Not SOLELY because of SCHIP, but it was a factor. I've stocked it up with the best deals I could find online (although I've noticed CBID prices creeping up):

from Cigar Bid
1 Box 5 Vegas Miami by Pepin Garcia ($57)
1 Box Sol Cubano Cuban Cabinet by Oliva ($51)
1 Box Gran Habano #3 Corojo ($45)
1 Box Padilla Hybrid ($43)
1 "cuban wheel" Perdomo Fresh-Rolled ($69)
-- i.e, 50 nic puros that have not been aged, with no bands, no box, no cellopane

from JR Cigars
1 Box Flor de Murias ($39.50)

from Cuban Crafters
1 Box-Don Kiki Brown Churchill ($54)
1 Bundle-Teo Pepe ($34)

That's 205 stogies, at an average price of $1.92. All are well-known brands, except Flor de Murias and Teo Pepe. (All prices include shipping).

I've got a few bids still out there: Legends-Pepin Garcia, San Luis Rey Double Corona, Ramon Allones. I don't think I'll win any of those, though. My bids weren't very high.

I need to win a 60-ct chest of Omar Ortez Originals to make sure the humidor is set for a year

Boxes:
26 Padron Londres Maduro
25 Punch Elites Maduro

Packs:
10 DPG Cuban Classic Robusto
6 5 Vegas Classic Torpedo
6 5 Vegas Gold Torpedo

Singles:
Oliva Serie G Maduro Torpedo & Belicoso
Carlos Torano Casa Torano Torpedo
Excalibur No. 3 Maduro
Illusione CG4
Tatuaje Serie P Toro
Rocky Patel Decade Toro

I mostly used SCHIP as an excuse to stock up. I don't care if the retailers benefited, there were some deals to be had, so I benefited to.

Likewise Cheroot. I;ve used SCHIP as a good reason to stochk up. I usually have about 200 sticks on hand. Between Feb and March i'm adding about 200 more. As long as I can swing it I'll keep going for a while. I only buy on sale though. I haven't been using Cbid much because the prices I've seen for some of my selections are regular CI prices.

Re: Stocking UP....and the SCHIP tax...

I've got a new 100-count 'dor that needs fillin' by April!

Just ordered a box of Padron 2000s, but that only gets 'er up 1/4 of the way!

I would stock up heavily on Padron as they're the smoke I always can enjoy, even though I like to mix in all kinds of things in my rotation. I suppose I should embrace a LITTLE more variety in my purchasing, though!

Thoughts on stocking up (from a B&M owner perspective)...

When S-CHIP goes into effect on April 1st, prices will go up on new inventory as it is received. If the manufacturers pass along the 40 cent tax it willl result in about a $1 per stick increase, due to margins, OTP and sales taxes.

Note, I said NEW INVENTORY. There is no floor stocks tax on cigars, so existing inventory prices will not need be increased. Popular cigars will have rapid price increases, but there are lots of hidden gems that I expect to have at old prices through 2009 and probably into 2010, as my inventory currently turns about once a year.

So, my $.02 is, no need to panic buy, unless you have to have the most popular items in the humidor.

Great advice. And good to know that not everything will jump in price after the first of April. Unless of course the retailers and online dealers decide to make no distinction between old and new inventory and just raise all their prices.
In any case I am stocking up.

Re: Stocking UP....and the SCHIP tax...

Think about it, if we taxed every vice/passtime, according to it's potential for harm;

Beer would cost more than Single Malt Scotch.

Candy bars would cost more than pot.

A Happy Meal would cost more than a candy bar.

Cigarettes would cost the same as beer.

Screw-top wines would cost 100 times more than fine wines.

A Cigar would cost 1/50th of what cigarettes would cost.

A gun would cost about the same as a cigar.

A car would cost more than a nuclear missle.

And prostitution, would be free.

Go ahead, defeat my logic, I dare ya!

Well, if you are talking about POTENTIAL for harm then a car would not cost more than a nuclear missle. Who knows about the rest of your logic. LOL

Re: Stocking UP....and the SCHIP tax...

Screw tops have little to no indication of the quality of wine you're getting. That's like saying single malt that comes in a tube is better than the ones that don't.

Arnie.....Cars of and by themselves are fine. Add alcohol, or youthful inexperienced , an inattentive driver, etc and then you have a problem. Alcohol is THE big one. Unless your post was one for nuclear safety??

Guns are a lot like chain saws, four wheelers, motorcycles, ocean sailing, private aviation and a few other endeavors. VERY unforgiving to any inattention or carelessness.

My .02 anyway.

I have bought 3 boxes since I got my new humidor. And considering it's only a 50 ct I have already made myself a tupperdor for the overstock.
