Re: Stocking UP....and the SCHIP tax...
There will be a floor tax on mini cigars, and I am stunned that we haven't seen big sales on those on the web.
Retailers should dump those now (so I can buy them dirt cheap). Small cigars (petite coronas) also will be hit hard by the SCHIP tax and smart retailers should be dumping those as well. Fortunately I am good for two Obama administrations. I will check in then to see which retailers are still around. :-) ![]()

The only mini cigar that General Cigars (Macanudo, Cohiba, Partagas, Hoyo de Monterrey, La Gloria Cubana, etc) sells is the Hoyo de Monterrey Miniatures. The Puritos, Cigarillos, Ascots, etc are large cigars. The wholesale cost of these are expected to rise by 52% (35 cents max) per stick. The business of selling tins is about to be devasted! |

Re: Stocking UP....and the SCHIP tax...
another FYI... just got off the phone with an unamed online retailer after discussing the tax with them. They indicated that some of the mfg they deal with directly will be eating some of the cost of the tax if not all of it in order to keep product moving and customers happy. It was mentioned that there is enough room in the margins prior to retail to help with this increase, at least with a fair share of manufacturers.
So with a few of the mfgs that can handle the increase we should NOT be seeing an increase in retail prices. This means that those manufacturers need to be vocal if they're helping out by lowering cost to retail on their products. Now isn't the time for those mfgs willing to stem off any kind of downturn by letting their retailers get away with increasing profit under the guise of an alleged tax increase. We should try and compile a running list of manufacturers that are willing to take part in a tax related price equalization to help ensure we keep these retailers in line. We need to do what we can to prevent tax related scamming from the "hit and run" sales mentality. I know some of these online retailers have some items with pretty low markup and it may not be fair to ask them to help shoulder the tax burden, but it ain't right that they should be allowed to use the tax as an excuse if they're getting adjusted cost from the manufacturers or distibutors. Transparency is the key folks... we gotta keep an eye on overseas wage increases, increased import taxes and other miscellaneous increases so we know who's trying to increase profit without justification. At the moment, I can't start the list off with the names I've discussed. Maybe some retailers here on the site would care to relate their information or even a mfg or two who hangs out is willing to start at the top. Doesn't Pete J. hang out here? Let's ask him if he's one of those mfgs that's gonna try and help absorb? For people that love cigars and can only afford a $20 bundle every now and then, $28 bucks may be enough to switch them off. At the other end of the spectrum are those who regularly pay 8-10 bucks a cigar and paying 8.40 or 10.40 doesn't mean a thing. But that's not everyone, and an across the board .40 increase will definitely kill off some lines out there that otherwise were working well for the cost concious consumer as well as the retailer selling them. If the end result of this increase is a dying off of budget smokes or minis as was pointed out, and a compression of the classess in terms of having less selection to choose from and higher price points, then it's going to directly affect manufacturers. What's gonna happen with the White Owl, Phillies, Dutch Masters and rest of the budget line cigars? |
