Welcome to the fold here and what Jonesee said to you is right on the mark. It is a journey rather than a sprint,,enjoy the ride and try different cigars until YOU find what YOU like and then smoke the heck out of them.

I think you'll like the salute, of the couple I've smoked from it so far, I thinks it's great...I also bought a large package of 100 cigars of Thompson branded smokes, some were ok some were sheet. I didn't join the forums until later into the hobby/habit so I didn't really know what was good and what was not. I based my purchases on price and the thinking that handmade ment a good smoke. Since on Puff I've been learning a lot and have improved my taste in cigars(still can't taste most of the flavors people talk about but I think I know what's good and what's crapola)..Stay safe and keep on smoking.....

Thompson is noted for CHEAP cigars. all the ones you mentioned are all their house brands, and are pretty much what you experienced. all the cigars mentioned in the other post are all good try em, and try different WRAPERS 90 % of the flavor is in the outer wraper ie Maduro sumatara etc. try Cigars intl. good luck A J

Re: Need opinions on my first week of testing...

Well my 21 Gun Salute didn't show up today, So I had to spend a bunch of money at the ONLY cigar shop in town. I was out as of last night and started getting the shakes this morning!

This is what I bought today for tonight and this weekend....

1 - Rocky Patel 1990 Robusto
1 - Cusano maduro 18 yr.
1 - Monte Cristo white
1 - SF Gurkha (I know...)
1 - SF Honduran Gold...(I know...)
1 - SF Dominican Gold...(I know...)

The three SF smokes were just fillers so I didn't spend too much money, but the top three on the list will be thoroughly tested.

I'll let you know what I think...

A..........

Re: Need opinions on my first week of testing...

Weekend Report:

Suprisingly!!! The cheap SF Dominican Gold was great! The other two SF smokes were pretty plain jane, mild and boring.

Now the Cusano Maduro, on the other hand was definitely a good smoke...Noticeably mild and quality draw...still not an eyebrow raiser though....

The Monte Cristo white label was NOT even close to what I expected from reading reviews. Although I could tell it was a quality smoke even without the label, it failed to knock my sox off. Maybe too mild? Not enough noticeable toungue sensation at sweet spot.....

Tonight the RP 1990 Robusto after dinner.......

I hope this pattern of trying expensive cigars and NOT being impressed does not conitinue? The SF Dominican was a pleasant suprise however, at 1.99 each!!!! Maybe truly mild cigars are just not my thing?
Looks like I'm becoming a medium bodied guy who likes my tongue to really feel it half way down......(Geez, that sounds gross!!!) LOL...LOL

Looking back that Punch Gran Puro seemed super strong to me, but might just be at the limit of what I'm looking for?

21 Gun salute should be here tomorrow!!!

Thanks,

A.......
