Do you like every top shelf cigar?

Not too long ago, I was herfing with a couple of guys and we were talking about different top shelf cigars. You know, Opus X Padron Serie 1926. You get the idea. Anyway, one guy said that he didn't like Opus X as much as C.A.O. and I made the statement "Some people like Vanilla ice cream and others chocolate ice cream.

Have you ever smoke a moderate to expensive cigar, didn't care for it and wondered why other people like them? With this in mind, what expensive cigars have you smoked, not cared for and wondered why.

In my case it was the God of Fire Don Carlos. I love the Carlito but not the Don Carlos.

Re: Do you like every top shelf cigar?

A couple of years ago I spent Christmas with my family. My dad had a box of Don Carlos, and a handful of Opus-X. We smoked several of each over the holidays. All in all, I preferred the Don Carlos over the Opus. Perhaps my palate was not mature enough to enjoy the complexity of the Opus-X. I just remembered that the Don was way smoother. It remained my favorite smoke for a long time. I have not tried an Opus-X again since, but I trust that they are good cigars. I just wasn't ready for them at the time. I will have to try one again and see how (or if) my tastes have changed.

Re: Do you like every top shelf cigar?

I've met very few cigars I didn't like. Some of the top shelf stuff I don't think is all that special, but I still like them.

Diamond Crown,,,I just can't get my taste buds wrapped around this one and for the pricing on it,,,it needs to come with some kind of warranty,,lol. I'm sure there are others I have tried but this particular cigar comes to the forefront.

Re: Do you like every top shelf cigar?

Opus X and Diamond Crown Maximus were pretty epic letdowns for me, as were about every other top-shelf-above-the-top-shelf cigars I've tried, minus the second Padron 1964 Maduro I tried.

Re: Do you like every top shelf cigar?

I love Diamond crowns #5's a lot. But agree the price is high on them.

Anyways...

I tried quite a few TOP shelf cigars, and many name brand cigars over the last 3 years. To be quite honest, I found a "house" brand at a local cigar shop, that I love out of them all.

Re: Do you like every top shelf cigar?

What makes a cigar a Top Shelf stick? The price? Honest question?

I like cigars! I have not had to many TS, though. Little story: At day 9 into my new hobby I bought and smoked an OPUS X. The first inch, I thought it was unique and interesting. After that, I realized I was in over my head. I was getting sick. I did not like that...fast forward. I smoked another the other day, delicous!

I guess the answer is, so far, yes. I have enjoyed/liked them. However, I don't feel that all I have I smoked were worth price, but hey - to each their own.

I love me some Padron 1926, 40 Anni, 80 anni. OPUS X is good but I would rather have a PAM. ESG is great, too. BTL- awesome. Romeo and Juliet, good cigar, butI well never buy one again. I didnt like it enough to pay the $$.

What are the TS'ers for the following:
RP
La Aurora
Montecristo
Partagas
Gurkha (excluding the $1000 cigar they have)
Torano

Joe

Re: Do you like every top shelf cigar?

I share the same philosophies on smoking a cigar that I do when playing poker... if the bankroll (price) is above what you can stomach, stay away from the game. There are plenty of enjoyable smokes that are just as good IMO @ decent prices. All it comes down to with Manuf. and TS sticks is supply and demand...make a limited amount of anything market the shite out it and someone with a large enough bankroll will buy (into) it.

Probably a third to a half of the Top Shelf stuff I can take or leave, and a short handful I just can't stomach at all...

Re: Do you like every top shelf cigar?

I tried an Opus-X not too long ago. It just tasted like regular cigar to me. I didn't find anything too special about it. The same thing with Davidoff cigars, as with the Opus....there was a lot of hype for these two cigars. Maybe I am not as fully developed in cigar smoking as some of you guys, I'll definately like to try them again someday.

However, the Casa Fuente brand, and the Padron '64 are probably my two top shelf favs. Considering I didn't like the Opus too much, I'm surprised I enjoyed the Casa Fuente! But maybe it was because I was spending time with my girlfriend when I smoked either one, So it just made them that much more enjoyable.

Re: Do you like every top shelf cigar?

There are very few cigars not CBE (capable of being enjoyed). Tastes will differ, of course, but many times I think that the problem is with the smoker, not the smoke. I have witnessed veteran smokers attack their cigars with a fury, finishing off a double corona in thirty minutes. And it's no surprise when their judgment of the cigar is negative. They have not learned how to enjoy a cigar. There are a few cigars, usually flavored ones, like vanilla or raspberry, that I cannot enjoy, and there are those cigars with burn or draw problems, problems which inhibit enjoyment. Yet except for these, every cigar, at least for me, is CBE.

I never tried an Opus-X but I never met a better smoke then the Padron 64's.
