V Cut

Sorry if this has been asked before, but does anyone have any views / opinions on the various methods of cutting the cap from a cigar?

I have a Palio cutter, which is superb. I also have a punch, which I like using. The one method I do not use is a v cut.

Does anyone out there use a V cutter and what do they think about it?

Re: V Cut

I use a v-cut when i can. I find that it is less likely to overcut, misscut, and wrapper unravel on me.

I agree. If you want to try one without spending the money on the good tabletop models you can get a Xikar (Wolf) pocket v-cutter for about $10.

Re: V Cut

I tried one once. I didn't care for it too much so I haven't done it again.

Re: V Cut

I like a v-cut. But my college age son does too, so I can never seem to find my cutter. If you smoke Sancho Panza, I highly recommend it. Their caps are their weakpoint and the v-cutter is the best thing for them.

This is mine and I love it. I use it for Belicosos, Pyramids and Torpedos. Sometimes small ring gauge as well.

Re: V Cut

This is what I use from BostonCutters,,never needs sharpening after 12 years but it ain't cheap. When this thing cuts, you get a great cut with no strands of tobacco hanging off the cigar. It goes for a bit over $100. There are others that look like this on other sites for $10 or so but it's not the same thing. You get what you pay for,,,a $10 V cut vs. a $100 V cut.

Re: V Cut

I tried the guillotine(sp?) and found that I cut too thin or too fat. Left too large an opening and allowed too much tobacco into my mouth.

I liked the punch. Liked it until....

I tried the V-cutter. Got a $2 plastic job at the cigar shop in the mall. I love it. It's clean and narrow. Great opening for smoke, not open enough for tobacco problems. I'll probably stick with the V-cut from now on.

This cutter makes a very clean cut and if you want to try the V I say get this one to start with. I think the reason it cuts so well is because the blade is 180 from all the other v cutters I have seen. A norm v cutter the blade is pointed going left to right like this > cutting from the center out. The Wolf's cutter is shaped like this moving left to right < so it cuts from the outside in. It really does cut like butter.

Re: V Cut

Until not long ago I allways did the straight cut, until the shop I smoke at got in a table top v cutter and I relized that its very good for the draw. the punch wasn't good, the flow of smoke was to slow for me.
And another thing everytime I cut the straight cut the guys at the shop would say I cut off to much, I'm waisting cigar.

Re: V Cut

I have a retractable punch, a V cutter, and double edge guillotine cutter, all inexpensive. I started with the punch, but seldom use it now. I use the V for the larger ring gauges with flatter caps and smokes with mixed fillers. The V requires no skill.

I had a problem using the guillotine. Blamed the cutter and considered buying a more expensive one. The I came across a thread that said to close the blades against the cap, apply a slight amount of pressure to cigar against the cutter and make a firm cut. This solved my problem.

They all serve their purpose.
