Is the Smoke killing your throat? Home-made advice?

I didn't find a Cigar (Health) Area. Although doesn't that word - Health - seem kind of bothersome. Yah it does huh.
Maybe Cigars and the Human Body is better. No no no. Sounds too much like Science Class.
Well. Whatever the heck the word that sounds good to use. Thats what you should imagine this topic sitting beside.

***

So I got some serious Acid Reflux in the throat and its burning up like a Motha'. I have this fantastic little pill I can pop that literally reduces the stomachs production of acid by a lot, and it virtually eliminates the problem. So I myself have a ready solution. Takes a couple hours to kick in but it works for days and days and its an easy fix. Pill is called - Aciphex.

I was kind of hoping that Cigars did not suffer the same fate as Cigarettes. Inhaling Cig smoke > acid in stomach crawling up throat > that burning feeling = makes sense. You inhale and it makes sense.

With Stogie's though, it would seem like it maybe we'd get a pass since we dont inhale (most of us dont anyways) but thats a big NO. It still has an effect.

But I am sure others have the issue and likely not as bad as me and maybe you got some type of Home Remedy that you do before you light one up. All done to minimize that BurrRRRNninG feeling.
Drinking something, it coats the throat and bammm! Easy nice and happy.
Any remedies out there? Please share.

Re: Is the Smoke killing your throat? Home-made advice?

David, welcome to our lagoon, our little coral reef community.

My home remedy is to drink whatever alcoholic beverage I choose while I smoke. I wanted to say my favorite alcoholic bevreage, but then I realized I couldn't pick a favorite... Maybe I have a problem....

Other than that I keep any beverage close at hand and just take a drink if I begin to feel parched.

If anyone has an actual home remedy for acid reflux, let's patent that sucker... we will be rich.

Again, welcome to our community...

Smoke in a well ventilated room, with a high quality air cleaner in it. As mentioned above, a beverage also helps.

Re: Is the Smoke killing your throat? Home-made advice?

I've pretty much stopped inhaling completely, and my throat irritation has dropped almost to zero. The occasional sip of iced tea or beer knocks out the rest.

Re: Is the Smoke killing your throat? Home-made advice?

I always drink beer with my cigars. I can't really enjoy a cigar without any drink at all as it's just way too dry. The acid reflux thing, that has nothing to do with cigars really. I've had it for many years now. I take two Prilosec a day, one in the morning one in the evening. I take that cause it's over the counter; I just got really tired of having to make doctor appointments for refills since they wouldn't give me an open ended prescription.

It seems like everyone is getting it these days. I think there is definitely a reason behind it but obviously I have no idea what it is. Maybe it's preservatives, coloring agents, who knows. But one thing is certain, people of all walks of life get it... from the healthiest to the not so healthy.

Re: Is the Smoke killing your throat? Home-made advice?

I always get reflux when I smoke an Acid .......sorry could resist.....

Before ya blame the cigars look at other life style factors. Stress, diet, pants too tight, does it only happen when ya smoke cigars? or a particular cigar ...etc etc...I dipped Copenhagen for 25 years and suffered daily from it, was diagnosed with a hyaital(sp?) hernia and given Tagement....When Cope came out with the pouches I switched and my acid reflux was gone.....Since I've been smoking Cigars I still haven't had any problems at all other then a moderate smokers cough(don't inhale, just small amount gets through)....I would recommend a visit to your Dr and get it looked at..

I believe you mentioned recently quitting cigarettes. Maybe you are inhaling more than you realize? It's a hard habit to break, and can be
an unconscience reaction when you are smoking to inhale. Hope it
gets better for you.

Re: Is the Smoke killing your throat? Home-made advice?

Sometimes I get a cigar that bothers my throat a little, but not often. I am an acid reflux sufferer also & have been taking Prilosec for several years.

It sounds as if your acid problem reached very high in your esophagas. Perhaps you have some remaining irritation, or scarring. I hate to say this, but perhaps you need to lay off for a few weeks to allow your body time to heal.

Re: Is the Smoke killing your throat? Home-made advice?

As someone that also suffers from acid reflux, here are some of the steps I take to minimize the problem:

1. Avoid any sort of caffinate of alcoholic drink when smoking. The nicotine + caffine/alcohol will be a double whammy.
2. Avoid the usual "bad" foods: high in fat, onions, tomatos, cabbage, etc..
3. Avoid chocolates.
4. Avoid drink/food with high concentration of vitamine C (good luck with that by the way--every damn juice drink has added C).
5. Avoid smoking too fast.
6. Avoid smoking in enclosed areas.
7. Spit. A lot. The nicotine dissolved in your saliva, if ingested can irritate your stomach.
8. Religously take your proton pump inhibitor (the drug you mentioned, mine is Nexum). Because of this, you should also regularly supplement your diet with calcium--Tums tablets are good choice for this. I usually pop a few of these daily.
9. Avoid carbonated drinks.
10. Eat smaller meals more often instead of large meals.
11. Avoid peppermint. Don't ask me why, I switched to mint teas since I couldn't drink coffee but that only made things worse. Go figure.

Lastly, if all else fails, seriously consider cutting back or cutting out smoking completely. Prolong, uncontrolled acid reflux can be a Very Bad Thing (tm).

Re: Is the Smoke killing your throat? Home-made advice?

First off - Thanks for the warm welcome Guys (and Gals if there were any). Its appreciated. This community seems very solid and its likely built on the fact that everyone here gives and gets a lot of kindness and open communication and thats always a good thing with a group.

***

The Rolaids/Tums option is certainly a quick fix. I have the 1,000 quantity big bottles of those guys. Always use it when in need a of quick assist for pain relief.

The Alcohol thing Joneseeee is a tough one. When I have the pain and it hurts real bad, drinking my favorite drink 'Whiskey' will only aggravate the problem and make it worse. Like pouring salt on an open wound.
Lets do the Patent thing man. As of now its a drink with crushed Rolaids and water. We'll see what we can add to it as more ideas come in.

The whole lack of inhaling thing is curious. I mean, thats what would make it seem like there shouldn't be an issue but there obviously is. Its tough to test because I am popping those pills everyday and it eliminates the issue. Maybe some day I will do a test and report.

Rev & KickU are right. Its definitely not just the Cigars. I am chronically 'stressed' and or 'anxious' and that is very well likely a big contributor to the thing.

Its a chronic thing with me. I have a Tube with Camera shoves down my throart a few years back and the lining of my Esophogus was basically gone. Eaten away because of all the acid. I have a bad valve down there. Its supposed to keep the acid in your stomach down inside your stomach but my valve is busted and so its easy for the Acid to crawl up my throat. The Aciphex pill is truly remarkeable. Its not over the counter Andy so you'll have to get a prescription if you wanna use it. It does the job though, with great results. And while I am using it, I am luckily avoiding the problem. If I dont have Acid crawling up, I am not damaging the throat and technically avoiding the issue. You dont wanna be stuck to pills all the time but I think this one will be with me forever. I try to not use it all the time because Acid in the Stomach is actually good. Its what kills all the bad stuff in food. We can technically eat a fresh kill of anything and trust that the stomach will destroy/kill a lot of the bad stuff that we usually cook out.

I have to do what Totem suggests and just in general minimize a lot of all that stuff he listed. Coffee is a killer.

Thanks again for the input & the warm welcome.

And lets keep adding to the Puff.com User Patented System for Throat Relief.

Re: Is the Smoke killing your throat? Home-made advice?

Forget the pills and go to the drug/health food store or Puritans Pride (vitamins.com) and buy yourself some Ginger Root capsules. Take two after your meals and that should relieve your problem. Also if you suffer from Arthritis pain then get some Tumeric (spice used to color mustard) capsules and take one of them with the two Ginger Roots. No side effects to worry about and no need to visit your doctor for prescriptions or liver scans.
