Anyone else here turn into a box pressed nut?
Quite some time ago after being a cigar smoker for a while I had tried my first box pressed cigar, it was a Rockey Patel Box Pressed Vintage. Back then I felt it was more a gimmick. After all this time I am now finding I am preferring box pressed cigars. I have found that the draw on nearly all box pressed cigars I've had is superior to standard round cigars. With all the box pressed I've had, from the cheapest $2 smokes to the $35 Padron 80th Anni, the draw is pretty much perfect! I now LOVE box pressed cigars!! I also smoke RP The Edge and recently saw they have Rocky Patel The Edge Square available and think, "Daaamn... I want those!!" even though I am stocked up on the Edge.
So... anyone else find the same with box pressed cigars? Oh, and I've also noticed they feel better to hold. Don't get me wrong... I love regular round cigars. but I'm just finding box pressed to have the best draw and feel. Rev. |

Re: Anyone else here turn into a box pressed nut?
I'm not a box-press nut, really, but I am smoking a lot of them. However, this is because most Cubans are box-pressed, and that's what I'm smoking. I think they look awesome in the box flat-side-up. The only thing I have an issue with is the distortion of the size. A box-pressed cigar looks much smaller than it is. My Punch Royal Selection No. 11s look like honkers compared to my Bolivar Coronas Extra out of a dress-box, and my Partagas Partagas de Partagas No. 1s don't look or feel nearly as large as my Fonseca No. 1s, which escaped box-pressing somehow. I don't have a preference either way though.

Re: Anyone else here turn into a box pressed nut?
I'm not crazy about box-pressed just because they dont really sit as well in your hand, plus I chomp down on my cigars so box pressed really aren't conducive to that...
That being said, the last 2 cigars I had were both Torano Exodus '59 box pressed gifted to me, and I have to say that on both of them the draw was absolutely perfect, so that's definately an advantage to box pressed. Last edited by Dom; 03-14-2009 at 07:03 PM.. Reason: spelling |

I love the 1959s are far as box pressed sticks go. Not usually a fan because of draw issues but Torano does a good job with theirs.

Re: Anyone else here turn into a box pressed nut?
Box pressed tend to have burn issues as well.
JMHO, but box pressed cigars are a fad that I won't be catching onto. In general, box pressed cigars are sold under the pretense of a larger ring gauge than their tubular brethren. Smashing down a loosely packed cigar and measuring across the fattest part of the smoke and calling that the ring gauge is a bit of a scam IMHO, and it tends to take advantage of those who haven't seen a box pressed cigar before. Again, JMHO, but advertising something as 6x54 when it's actually a loosely packed 50 smashed out to touch the 54 ring doesn't hold the mystical awe of a "box pressed beauty" to me. The thing that sucks is some decent smokes I like only come box press in the gauge I like, so it's either buy 'em and ignore the fad or find something else. I usually keep an eye out for replacements of box press if I can find them. |

Only one I've tried is the Vegas 5, and only because it was a gift. It was just OK, might have liked it better if it was round. The shape is just wrong IMO. I find them difficult to hold comfortably. Tried a Nub too, WTF half a cigar! No thanks. To each his own, something for everyone.

Re: Anyone else here turn into a box pressed nut?
I have only bought one cigar that was "intentionally" box pressed the Padron No 25 Maduro - all the others have been pressed over time in a box.
I really liked the No 35 but I am no nut for the box press. I would rather my cigars become pressed due to time rather then marketing.

Re: Anyone else here turn into a box pressed nut?
Two things I love about box pressed cigars:
1) Easy to stack in the humidor. 2) Feels "right" when holding it. But the most important things are taste/draw/burn. Could not care less what the stick looks like... ![]()

Re: Anyone else here turn into a box pressed nut?
I'm not really a box pressed nut, but I do enjoy a good box pressed cigar once in awhile. Its just a unique shape and feel with the cigar that makes it a more memorable smoke for me.

Re: Anyone else here turn into a box pressed nut?
I have actually had some box pressed cigars lately and found them to be very good,,,CAO Brazilia, RP that was mentioned as well. Cigars come in many shapes and sizes and it is up to us which one we like or those that suit our tastes.

Re: Anyone else here turn into a box pressed nut?
They're good. I think it matter what cigar it is, not that it's box pressed. I really liked the LFD Factory press II's. They were very tasty with the oscuro wrapper.
I just recently bought a box of LFD Double Ligero Hammer. Same great Double Ligero taste just in a box press. This size is also made in the Coronado.

I feel no difference between box-pressed and cabinet-round cigars.
