To cut or to core? That is the question.

Let me start off by saying hi to everyone as I am new to the Puff family. I am not new to smoking cigars but would definately consider myself a newbie. Especially after lurking in the forums learning from all you experts out there. Thanks.

The extent of my smoking days has always included drinking alcohol and/or golfing. This probably isn't the best way to fully appreciate a cigar. Well, I would like to take this hobby to the next level.

My question is, do you straight cut, v-cut or core your cigars and please explain why. I core my cigars because I do not like drawing tobacco into my mouth. I find coring helps to eliminate this problem. I have never v-cut nor have I seen a v-cutter. Perhaps I should try it some day.

I prefer a straight / guillotine cut. I rarely get bits of tobacco in my mouth. You might be chewing the end too much when you are smoking it.... If it's a poorly / loosely-rolled cigars, there isn't much you can do about that.

Straight cut, when i punch it seems to collect to much tar.

Re: To cut or to core? That is the question.

The popular cut is always the straight cut and pretty much suits any and all. The punch is something you get used to and if you are "chomper" this is not a good cut as the hole will collapse at some point and plug up on you. I love a V Cut only because the cutter I have is surgical and never leaves a cigar with bits of tobacco coming off of it. For $100 it should also make you coffee in the morning but I digress,,,I have had mine for 10 years or so and always gives me a great cut and I also use it on torpedoes which are almost taboo for a V Cut. This little cutter will cut any cap or shape cigar and that is why I love mine,,,I have done plenty of torpedos and with a V Cut it actually smoked better,,the draw is absolutely perfect with the cut being deep enough to encourage an easy draw with generous portions of smoke.

I definitely prefer the straight cut. Usually you'll never have a problem with tobacco being released into your mouth with this cut unless you're smoking a short filler cigar.

Re: To cut or to core? That is the question.

With the straight cut, I only get tobacco in my mouth if I make a sloppy cut, or too far up the shoulder. Even then, it's maybe one little piece in 45 minutes, not really anything to worry about.

I usually make a straight cut with my Xakar cutter. I do keep a punch on my key chain for that odd emergency. I can't remember the last time I used that punch. The boy scouts taught me to be prepared so it is always on the key chain.

I don't carry a punch, but I have teeth!

Re: To cut or to core? That is the question.

I have a bunch of cutters and by far my favorite is my Wolf v-cutter. I have used xicar and palio and I still perfer the V or a punch. A few times I have had some tar issues and you can always just cut it again. Usually if I don't smoke to fast it isn't a problem. I also will V-cut torps like another poster mentioned. It's a matter of taste. Do what you like.

Re: To cut or to core? That is the question.

I use a straight cut for stronger sticks and the punch or vee for medium or mild ones. I don't chomp them any more so it's just a matter of tar buildup for me. The smaller opening concentrates the smoke and it can be irrating to me if it's potent. You can always start with a punch and recut it straight I suppose. Experiment and have some fun.

Re: To cut or to core? That is the question.

Oh y'all this is actually the question that got me to sign up.
I actually thing both punching and the straight cut have their place.

I like to straight cut smaller cigars and punch the larger ones....

Not sure exactly why... thats just what I do.

Re: To cut or to core? That is the question.

Welcome aboard. I use a V-Cut and do it twice to make a cross. I like doing that to ensure that I dont over cut.
