They are a very very good cigar and highly rated by a good many people....but there are others just as good for a lot less as well.
A big part of the price is in the limited availability. They are usually only released around fathers day and Christmas etc and are usually limited to two or three per customer.
Ever since they began they have always been hard to get and doled out in small amounts which caused people to want them even more,to the point there is a stigma associated with having/smoking them. The label is big and bold and along with the well known limited availability says I have something rare and hard to get. The suggested MSRP is around $10-$13 but they regularly sell for as high as $35 because of it.

It's like diamonds, they aren't really rare but they are coveted and diamond companies limited how many are released to keep the price high.

well said. they're a great smoke. FULL bodied...a little kick to it... for an unseasoned vet...aka those that prefer the light-medium bodied smokes...then you might not like...

it's really their marketing and how that set limits. have you noticed when you're in a store when it sets limit x you tend to try to buy x???

it's the allure of the smoke... which is why habanos are coveted.

sure b/c of the winds that blow the soil in cuba produces awesome tobacco leaves... but i've had a bunch of smokes that rock my fave habano: Monte A.

but again...it's the allure of it all.

IMO but I love puffing on an Opus while sipping on Glen Livet 18 after a great steak or a heavy italian meal

I agree that these are probably over-hyped and deliberately distributed in limited quantities to entice demand. At the same time, I've wanted to try them for a long time so took the plunge for 5. Kudos to JR for selling them at MSRP. I know they catch some crap from the boards due to Lew's eccentricities, but they could obviously gouge on Opus and chose not to.

Re: OPUS X @ J&R Stores

The local JR gets them, and actually sets them out on a sales table for commonfolk to see. The horror of it all!
