Spring Pollen Affecting My Quality of Life Sympathy Thread

My allergies have been under control pretty well till this week. With the nicer weather, I have been excited to enjoy the outdoors, and cigars a little more frequently, but alas, my nasal allergies are affecting cigar flavor. My smokes are just not as tasty as usual. Normally rich, flavorful, smokey treats have been reduced to mere woodiness. Oh well, patience...
This pollen too shall pass.

Claritin-D (the behind the counter, yet non prescription stuff) is the only thing that gets me through April/May.

Re: Spring Pollen Affecting My Quality of Life Sympathy Thread

Ha, I too suffer terribly during this season! Luckily, I'm not suffering too tremendously right now. Started taking my Claritin subsitute, Loratine from Right Aid, at the beginning of this month to let it get into my system and start working ahead of time. Loratidine works mildly for my severe allergies but has the lowest amount of side effects. When I take them I have NO side effects whatsoever and I've taken 4 times the doseage daily for years. This year I'm am trying a lower doseage at 2 a day, one morning on and at night (used to be 2 morning 2 night). I have some Zyrtec waiting to try but am waiting for my allergies to become intolerable that I have to give in to trying them.

I know what you are going through brother! Hope you feel better soon. Definitly take some allergy meds. If one doesn't work try another. At least they can make things slightly more bearable!

Re: Spring Pollen Affecting My Quality of Life Sympathy Thread

I have two burning eyes filled with "eye pus". Can't work, can't watch TV, can't read. Got some prescription stuff from my doc and it has helped but it still feels like I have sand in my eyes. Fun.

I gave up on prescription Claritin, etc. years ago--none of them were ever strong enough. The only thing that has ever worked was acupuncture (of all things).

Wow, that is reeeally interesting to hear as one of my coworkers was telling me about this today. He has a brother or some family member that gets bad allergies and he said the one thing that's worked the best for him and lasted longest was acupuncture. I've always thought it a quasi-science but always kept an open mind to it. I think next season I'm gonna try it just for the hell of it, like an experiment. I got nothing to lose but some cash doing it so.

As for the allergies, well I am now suffering big time! When I last posted I was doing kinda well. Yesterday and today have been terrible for me. But tomorrow temps are dropping into the high 50's and the pollen forecast shows it going a little lower. After the cool weather passes I'm going to try the Zyrtec I bought and see if that is any better than the generic Claritine (ie. Loratidine) I've been taking.

Part of life living in the east and midwest. Spring brings on the watery eye syndrome. Love vacations out west where all that stuff clears up for a week. You can smell and taste things.

Re: Spring Pollen Affecting My Quality of Life Sympathy Thread

I'm taking allegra and using a nasal wash at night (called a neti-pot). They help keep me from complete debilitation, but when the pollen gets really intense, I lose some of my sense of smell and taste.
We have some cooler weather and rain forecast this week, so hopefully some relief in the near future...

Re: Spring Pollen Affecting My Quality of Life Sympathy Thread

I was having some real problems with allergies a week and a half ago, but finally went to the doctor. He gave me an allergy shot, and I am now taking Zyrtec AND Veramyst. I can actually breath! It is awesome!

Re: Spring Pollen Affecting My Quality of Life Sympathy Thread

For the last couple years I would get them and then no matter what I took it would turn into a sinus infection which really freaking sucks!!!!!!!! In Oct I had a doctor give me a Rx for SINGULAIR , it is a drug you take once everyday, it doesn't have any side effects like all the stuff mentioned above. This drug is used for Asthma, but they discovered that it helps for allergies. When I was on it I hade ZERO problems, I was off for a month and my allergies came back and I got a sinus infection. I'm back on it now and once again no allergies at all, and its bad this week in Houston.

Like I said you take this every day, not just when the allergies flare up! I suggest that everybody give your doc a call and get a Rx for this stuff, it works awesome. By the way my 5 year old boy even takes it (his own of course, not mine).
