Wrapper off to rest em?

New friend suggested my gars might need to rest a bit. I assume that means stick em in the humidor and let them sit for about 6 months. If the gars come with cellophane wrapper ... (plastic wrap) is it best to remove this before storing/resting in the humidor?

Re: Wrapper off to rest em?

It all depends. If you're going to put it down for a nap and not move it around, best to take it off. The only good reason for leaving it on is for purposes of protection. I don't move mine around much, so I remove all celophane before they go in the humi.

Acutally, no one uses actual "celophane" anymore. It's all plastic now. Plastic inhibits circulation and I know way too much about chemical off-gassing of plastics to be comfortable leaving it in my humidor. Personally. I just wish the practice of sheathing would go away.

Re: Wrapper off to rest em?

Everything I`ve ever read says it dont matter.

But personally, I leave them on until they go to the top shelf. I like to play with them and move them around, they say thats always a good idea, move them around a bit. I probably move them around too much if you know what I mean, LOL. If they be going to the top shelf, then there days are numbered, so I take will it off.

But in the end,
Do what works for you,

Randall

Re: Wrapper off to rest em?

If you are only napping them for 6 months or so then the best benefit by leaving them on will protect it from mold as leaving the cell-o on reduces the oxygen flow to the cigar. If you were long term aging I would say leave them on for sure because it would slow down the aging process and help retain the oil to preserve the flavor. To put it simply.

Please cite your sources. I believe you are incorrect. I have never seen a single post on any forum confirming the use of plastic and not cellophane in the manufacturing of cigars. Cellophane is still in wide use throughout the world for a variety of purposes. It is and always has been plant based and therefore moisture permeable.

Re: Wrapper off to rest em?

I started out keeping them on but now I take them off! I don't think it really matters.... but I like to be able to pick them up when I am ready for a cigar, smell a few and pick one that I am going to smoke, and I like how they look better w/o the wrapper on too.

Re: Wrapper off to rest em?

The topic title is slightly misleading.

I take the celophane off but for appearance reasons no other reason.

+2 on how they make the humi smell when you open it.

Re: Wrapper off to rest em?

Both ways have their advantages as many have already said. I like the look of "naked" sticks, but hate when the wrappers get damaged if I move them around a lot. So I guess the answer is on and off...lol!

You really dont need citations. Just test for yourself. Remove one of your prophelaxes and torch it. If it sizzles and gives off whitish gray smoke, it's celo'. On the other hand, if it gives off a rather large flame and you see dark gray/black smoke, it's plastic. Post your findings.

Re: Wrapper off to rest em?

Real cello is only semi permeable. Short term storage take it off, long term, probably doesn't matter. Plastic, always take off, if you can tell the difference. I can't, so I always take them off.
