Tick-Tick... Bomb yer neighbor?

Tick-Tick-Tick...

So, here's the deal. There's this older black guy, lives in the apartment across the street. I don't know him, we've never spoken. Don't know his name, or much about him. We're on a "wave and nod" basis. I see him outside all the time, smoking cigarettes. He usually wears a coat, fedora, sandals, and what appear to be plaid, flannel pajama pants. I think he lives with his daughter, but whoever it is won't let him smoke indoors.

This morning, I got the crazy idea to bomb him. I have a little Tupperware dish, just waiting until the next time I see him. There's a 5 Vegas Gold torpedo, a Perdomo Slow-aged Glorioso, and a humi-pack in a zip-lock, a cheap-o guillotine cutter, and a gently-used, freshly-filled Ronson JetLite. Total package cost to me is under $10. He may hate cigars, for all I know, or might think I have pity on him and think he can't afford them, or skittish about some random white dude giving him something out of the clear blue. Who knows? Could totally backfire on me, I guess, but I'm going to do it anyway and see what happens.

There's an older Korean guy on one side of me, and a Native guy on the other side, probably about my age. Don't know either of them, either, but I do know they both smoke too, and always outside. If Pajama-Pants seems appreciative, I think I'll try the same thing with the other two guys. What they Hell, right? What if it turned into a semi-regular Herf, once or twice a month? I could spring for four smokes a month, if that's what it takes. The Native guy has only been here about a month, but I know the Korean guy and Pajama-Pants know each other well enough to talk in the street fairly often.

I bet there's some stories there. I'll see what happens, and post updates as warranted. Here's the package:

If I suddenly drop offline and don't come back, that means his daughter found out. Seriously, she looks like she could kick my ass, and probably wouldn't think twice about it.

Re: Tick-Tick... Bomb yer neighbor?

I've only seen him once this week, and I didn't have a chance to wave him over. I've been working evenings this week, and that's when he's usually out. By the time I get home, it's pretty late. I'm sure I'll see him this weekend, and I'll drop the bomb on him then.

Re: Tick-Tick... Bomb yer neighbor?

Well, the package has been delivered, but I am stunned at my own cluelessness. I'm not quite sure how to say this, but much to my astonishment, I found out that he's, umm... well, he's, umm... well, he's actually not black. He's just a dark-skinned Asian guy. Anyway, I saw him out puttering around yesterday, so I grabbed the package and headed over. Since the original post, I also threw in a Fuente corona, too. I asked him if he ever smoked cigars, and he said that he did, so I gave him the package. He opened it and looked at the stuff inside.

He seemed like he was appreciative, but very confused, and possibly a little freaked out, which is understandable. From his perspective, it had to be a fairly bizarre thing to have happen. It would be perfectly natural to be suspicious, and think that maybe I'll expect something in return for it later on, but I hope not, because that's totally not the case. I look at it as just honoring an elder, that's all. The weather has been gorgeous, and he has to smoke outside anyway, so he might as well enjoy it, right? That's my thinking, at least. Ideally, it will make him curious enough to come over and talk to me about it.

We'll just have to wait and see if anything happens. If it does, I'll post an update.
