Thompson Cigars Sampler?

Hey Guys-

I just got a little gift out of the blue from my father in law and it was one of those "higher end" samplers that Thompsons offer. The sampler includes: 5 Cohibas Lons Grande, 5 Punch Rotschilds, 5 La Glorias, 5 Bolivars

I guess my question is what is the deal with these Cohibas? Im assuming theyre not real Cohibas, right? I never ordered smokes from Thompsons and ive heard some not so nice things about them so I wasnt sure what to think.

The only cigar I smoked from this list are the Punch and im looking forward to trying all of them, I guess just wondering if theyre all legit? A very surprising and nice gesture either way though from him!
Thanks!

It depends upon what you mean by "real". The Cohibas sold in the US are Dominican cigars made for General Cigar. The brand is not affiliated with the Cuban brand of the same name. General acquired the US marketing rights to the name because the Cuban company cannot legally sell cigars in the American market. The most obvious difference is the band. The Cuban brand has a black, white and yellow-orange band with gold embossed lettering, while the Dominican brand has a black and white band with a red dot inside the O. You often hear Dominican Cohibas referred to as "red dot" Cohibas for this reason.

Re: Thompson Cigars Sampler?

Well your question about the Dom Cohibas has been answer but I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying cigars from Thompson. I always see that they offer great samplers, but have always heard bad stuff about them.

I don't like that about them but, I can't blame them for trying.

Re: Thompson Cigars Sampler?

I've actually purchased a bunch of samplers from them. I don't often do any more because I've learned which sticks I enjoy and usually just purchase those. Thompson has had some really nice offerings. One thing that turned me off was getting one with a 4 X 44 Gurkha Legend in it. It was a nice smoke but not available anywhere else. Very often they don't specify the vitolas that they sell in these samplers and that makes me suspect a short deal. That was my disappointment with them. Good deals on humidors tho.

That and much more. If you decide to deal with them, steer clear from their crappy house blends and DO NOT! and I repeat DO NOT! join their 250 club. They will shave points!

I am sure they are real Dominican Cohibas made by General Cigar, but they are not Cuban, if that is what you are asking....

Re: Thompson Cigars Sampler?

I have read alot of Thompson bashing here and while most everything else I've read here has seemed to accurate, entertaining and even educational...my experience with them has been different.

While sometimes I've found their prices to be higher than others, I have never received a bad cigar, bad service, slow delivery or ANY telephone calls. In fact I once made a double order and had a very positive experience with their customer service who not only fixed it but trusted me to send them back the order they had already sent, immediately refunding my credit card.

I ordered more from them when I was newer to cigars (lots of good samplers) than I do now (now, just when they have a favorite at a great price) but, again no bad experiences.

Re: Thompson Cigars Sampler?

The Cohibas from Thompson are absolutely NOT Cuban.

You WILL get catalog after catalog after catalog (but, I don't consider that a bad thing), and, if you gave them your email address, email add after email add.

You can stop the phone calls. Just call their customer service and ask them to remove your telephone number. Really, it was that easy in my case. No more phone calls.

I find Thompsons heavy on SAMPLERS and COMBOS, not straight cigars deals.

The only problem I have with Thompsons right now is that afer a sale, which is sent to a PO Box, they send a receipt to the house. The problem may lie more with the wife than Thompsons. She sees it, doesn't like it, and I have to deal with her. I'd rather they send the receipt to the PO Box as well. But, then, I haven't asked them to. ???

Re: Thompson Cigars Sampler?

The problem with Thompson's is there are much better vendors out there so why deal with someone that is sub-par.

Only ordered from them once. The shipping cost was high, it took them forever to get the cigars delivered, the packaging was terrible and they do not have a method to track your order.

Re: Thompson Cigars Sampler?

Hey Rob, that is a better sampler, for sure, someone loves you,
I have/had to been dealing with Thompson since about the first of the year.

THANK GOD I found this place!!

Now I`ll deal with CI, famous, and Holts. I`ve already ordered from Famous and CI and I must tell you its cheaper then Thompson and my first couple of orders have been spotless a pain free! My first order with thompson they sent to the wrong address! They tied up 50 bucks of my money and I got nothing, LOL.

From dealing with Thompson for the last 5 months I can tell you this about them, they are the king of the bait and switch in the gar biz. They`ll tell you the gars in a sampler are ALL long filler, but they`ll toss in one or two combo`s cause they figure you are stupid. You`ll buy one size, they send you another, and it aint a bigger size, I assure you. LOL. Out of 5 samplers ordered, not one of the 5 HOYO`s in 5 diferent samplers was in good enough shape to smoke, they were obviously putting bad HOYO`s in the samplers, IMHO. IN fact, I`ve had way too many dried out and bad cigars in the samplers from them, 2many!

Hopefully this will be my last rant ever about thompson, I dont plan on using them anymore, ever again.

Cheers, and Enjoy those gars,

Randy

Re: Thompson Cigars Sampler?

I bought a sampler from them in January. Most of the cigars were good. I got a great traveling case with it. No catalogs and no phone calls. Enjoy your cigars.
