Re: Non-smoking friends/wife
They wouldn't be my friends if they couldn't at least accept my smoking...I wouldn't light up in a nonsmoker's face at all the times, but at social occasions and certainly in summertime when out and about or at a BBQ or something, smoking will happen.
People who are so averse to smoke that they recoil in terror when in the presence of smoke, or "shun" anyone that enjoys cigars, are a bunch of ninnies if you ask me. Not the kind of folks I consider to be friends of mine. I don't have a wife or a girlfriend...but she would also have to deal with it. I'm not going to change, no one really does. Not worth it to have a girl around who doesn't agree with or accept your lifestyle...who wants that? As the great Zino Davidoff said, "If your wife doesn't like the aroma of your cigar, change your wife." |

Re: Non-smoking friends/wife
Then, I'm not alone. My wife not only hates smoking and knowing that I smoke, but will become physically ill (sinus infection) with very minimal smoke inhalation. Hence, I have never smoked a cigar in her presence. I wait til she goes to bed or is out of the house for a period of several hours and then make a trek out to my workshop. Restricting, I know, but I must respect her as well.

Re: Non-smoking friends/wife
Very married here, will be 9 years in October. From day #1 she knew I was a smoker and accepted it. Our first date was to an all day cigar event in Seattle, WA.
If a person truly wants to be with another person, they will accept the things they don't like as well as the things they do like and not try to change that person after a commitment is made. Also, if a person discovers they have a newfound passion, be it cigars or whatever, then the other person - again, if they truly want to be with that person - will make the allowance. If there is such a controlling nature of either persons involved then this is an unhealthy relationship.

Re: Non-smoking friends/wife
Great post DSturg369. That's exactly my situation with my fiancee. She's fine with me smoking the odd cigar when we're out on the beach, etc., and sometimes takes the odd puff. I still don't (and won't) smoke indoors, and try to be downwind from others when possible.
In regards to non-smoking friends, etc., I leave my cigars behind and respect their wishes. I was a non-smoker long before I was a smoker, and I can still remember what it feels like to be on the other end of things. |

I had a "sort of " friend, really just someone at work. He was a real bed wetter and I told him to F@$k off. The wife doesn't much like it but I figured God made men bigger and stronger than women for a reason. "Rednecks don't give a darn!" |

Re: Non-smoking friends/wife
Good post here. I have to agree with the majority here and having a wife who does not like the smell of cigars I am pretty much an outside smoker,,,that's ok as I have 4 decks to smoke my cigars which is one of the reasons we bought this house,,,ample areas to smoke my stogies. Conversely, when I come inside the house I get to hear the little comments but she's not too bad,,,,she at least tolerates it. My last wife,,,,she was a total beeeeyotch when it came to my stogies.
The only friends I have are those who smoke cigars or at least can deal with them without whining like a total wuss. Now if you are like Frank,,,you got the best of both worlds as you have a partner who enjoys what you enjoy,,they are your best friend and your breath cancels the other one out ( lol ),,,actually what a great deal,,,I'm jealous.

Re: Non-smoking friends/wife
I smoke in my home, and all my friends and relatives know it. If they don't want to visit, they don't have to. If a person won't smoke in their own home, they should have no expectation of being able to smoke indoors anywhere else.

Re: Non-smoking friends/wife
Do you think she might have a legitamate arguement since I never smoked anything until we had been married for 33 years?

Re: Non-smoking friends/wife
There has to be at least one thing she started doing after y'all got married that you can't stand. I'm not saying light one up at the dinner table, but she should respect you just as much as you respect her. So take turns, maybe the two of you spend an evening outside with no cigar smoking, the next time light one up.

Re: Non-smoking friends/wife
I may be in the minority here, but my wife likes the smell of cigars (so do my 2 kids for that matter). Everybody knows I am a BoTL, so if they come to my house they KNOW I am going to fire one (or 3) up. Its MY house, if you don't like the smoke....don't come over.
