Non-smoking friends/wife

Short of finding new friends and dumping the old (the wife is the hard one in that respect), what do you do with your non-smoking friends? They're offended if you smoke around them, even if it's your own home, at dinner, golf, on the patio, in the car, within eyesight, etc. Is there a happy medium somewhere?

Only 3 real choices here.....

1) Don't smoke and be miserable, albeit respectful of their wishes and depending on how good of friends they are. Real friends would respect your choice to be a smoker as well, especially iin places where smoking is allowed (in your own home ???).

2) Smoke and hope they get used to it, although I doubt this would happen.

3) Make new friends.

Not the best options but seriously, that's about it. Possible variants of the above but with the same end results.

I agree. Although it is important to be respectful to your friends. Lets face it. Great friends are hard to come by. Like any relationship, compromise is essential.

When friends are visiting my home, I would not smoke while eating or if children are around. Just common sense.

Don't smoke with non-smoking friends which is the majority. Obviously smoke with my smoking friends.

Wife is dead set against smoking, but that's the way it goes.

I do not like being in a smoke filled room especially when it is from cigarettes, so I respect the non smokers if it is an area where smoking is not allowed or no one is smoking.

Try not to invade anyones space, but I expect the same if I am there first.

The significant other hates the smell of smoke, so i just don't smoke around her. I don't ever NEED to have one, and we have enough time apart where its not a big deal.

I don't have any friends and my wife divorced me but in my opinion screw them all and get a dog...

Tough call. I do understand and agree that I would never smoke in an enclosed space with others around without some agreement that it's okay. I try not to offend or push my opinions or thoughts on others. I do, however, expect the same of them. Smoking outside at your home, and being told they don't like it brings into question how much your friends believe in your rights and freedoms. Unless the smoke is blowing back in her face, she can think what she wants, but keep her yap closed. If she finds it offensive that you are doing so, then she needs to rethink her own ideas. You aren't breaking the law or being obnoxious. You are enjoying yourself in your own home, doing something that is lawful, and not offensive in the least. If she finds that offensive she is more than welcome to not visit again.

But that is something that only you can answer. It's your life, home and friends.

I think that the smoking in the house or in the car is understandable. If you are at their home and you know that they don't like it, then it's their castle and respect that.

Outside on my deck or in my driveway, that is my domain. I would move down wind and they would have to deal with it. Fortunately my friends don't care and/or are (ex)smokers.

Fortunately my wife, who bought me a humi is OK with it. She doesn't smoke except for an occasional Miami Tat 5x32. Needless to say I have about 10 of those just for her in the humi.

My wife hates cigars, and doesn't even know I smoke. I usually smoke at friends' houses or I go out by myself and enjoy one by the lake! Someday, I'll come clean to her, but I need to stay in her good graces for the time being.

The ex-wife wouldn't have anything to do with cigars and we would fight because I wanted to smoke one freaking cigar every other Friday! Yeah we are not married anymore and my new wife will smoke with me

I wouldn't smoke in my truck with anybody unless they where ok with it. Never smoke in the truck with the kids. And I don't smoke inside the house. But at a bar or outside I haven't had to many non smoking friend complain. But I also try not to blow the smoke their way. If its not a freind complaining I try to blow the smoke their way LOL.

My wife is not a big fan but she tolerates me enjoying my cigars. I rarely smoke around her. I don't smoke around my non-smoking friends, even at my own house. At the golf course, all best are off cause I WILL enjoy my smokes on the links.
