Cigars From The Dominican Republic

Hello guys,
I have a very close friend of mine that will be visiting the Dominican Republic for a week or so, I must confess that I am not very familiar with Dominican cigars even though I have lived there for 5 years but was smoking cigarettes (was 15 YO)

So my question is have any of you bought cigars from Santo Domingo? And also what cigar brand do you recommend that I choose ? I can ask my friend to buy me 1 box. As far as I have heard there are lots of counterfeits

Don't buy anything in the DR. I love their cigars and smoke them a lot. ie Fuente, Montecristo, LFD etc.

The Dominican Republic is an export only country, which means that they have to export and the import for sale, so they are twice the price as we are in the US. I can buy a box of Opus X for $400 in the US, and when I was at the Duty Free store at the airport, the same box was $1,000 USD.

And all the Cubans there are fake. Some rolled with banana leaves.

Yup. Definately don't buy Cubans there. As a matter of fact I wouldn't buy Cubans in any NA country other than Cuba or Canada. And even then you need to know what your looking at. They will tell you that they are authentic Cuban but they are not. Plain and simple.
