Purchasing fuente fuente Opus X (Newbie)

Reading reviews on the net and various threads on the puff forums I guess my curiosity is getting the best of me. But I would like to a buy a fuente fuente Opus X. Only question I have to you much experienced smokers is will I be wasting my money since I'm Farley new to cigars only started about 2 months ago. And I know my palette is not well defined yet to the point were I can pick up certain flavors. Would it be to strong of a smoke for newbie? Should I hold off on the purchase until I got quite a few more cigars under my belt?

I say go for it! get 1-5, smoke one now.. you may just love it! Then try one months/a year down the road.. you might like it more or less. Either way, might as well try!

I also had that in mind by the time I get around to smoking it, it will have some age behind it.

Don't worry about it, just try them, you will like them or not. Also don't worry about the tasting. Rather than trying to taste leather, honey, etc, I think you are much better served by learning what tobaccos you like, and being able to taste them in a blend.

Most of the time you'll be able to find this info by searching on either the manufacturers or a retailers website. Another source might be an online publication i.e. Cigar Aficionado or CigarCyclopedia.

As far as getting some fuente fuente Opus X, do it, get a few. I'd try one after it's had a chance to rest from the trip, then another down the road aways. To me these definately get better as they age.

Re: Purchasing fuente fuente Opus X (Newbie)

I agree, If you can afford it,get about three. And if i'm not mistaken the shipments should start coming in on them for Fathers day now or very soon and you should be able to get them a tad cheaper. Smoke one now, then save the others for later down the road. You get to see how both your taste and the cigar has gotten different.

And though Opus is considered by many to be the pinnacle of the (domestic) cigar world there are some who don't care so much for them and as well there are other brands which deserve as much respect. The Padron 40th anniversary is in it's own right a legend and a completely different flavor profile than the Opus.Diamond Crown Maximus, Oliva serie V, Ashton VSG and ESG are a couple of others that are must tries at some point as well.

Re: Purchasing fuente fuente Opus X (Newbie)

Like it has been said, I would buy a few. Try one, and let the others rest a while. Here's the deal though. Don't try the strong ones at all yet. Try the milder ones at first, and eat before you smoke them...

Do: Med - Full
Double Corona, Chateau de Reserve, Maybe the Robusto, PerfecXion 2, Super Belicoso.

Do Not yet: Full - Very Full
xXx Power Ranger
Petit Lancero
PerfecXion X, 4, 5,

Just a suggestion.

Re: Purchasing fuente fuente Opus X (Newbie)

hello newbie good to have you on board. Everyone has the right answer , read the reviews some members are great with advive, but Id say start at mid range price cigars find out different countrys blends there are and what you like then start on smallish cigars a big one might give you a nasty nicotine buzz ( you dont want that believe me) try buying threes or five packs smoke one or two then store some then go back to try again. You will get a nice little collection this way, over the months move up the price range and size. cigars vary in a sampler even thought the were made in the same batch. Hold off on opus x there are hunderets of cigars and tastes.

Re: Purchasing fuente fuente Opus X (Newbie)

I don't think there's such a thing as a cigar "too good" for any smoker, regardless of how little time they've been smoking. As a cigar smoker, albeit a new one, you appreciate a cigar that you like and know when you don't like one (compared to occasional smokers who could smoke anything you give them). Whether you smoke it now or later won't change how it tastes; the only thing that will change will be your ability to pick out different flavors. Lacking that ability now won't or shouldn't affect your enjoyment of the cigar; what it tastes like won't change by knowing what it tastes *like*.

So buy a few (3) if you can, smoke one now and smoke the others maybe 6 months apart in the future and see how your appreciation and/or tastes change.

Re: Purchasing fuente fuente Opus X (Newbie)

man this thread makes me want to fire up an Opus right now.

I agree with the others telling the OP to get a couple, set some aside (Opus respond well to resting from what I have read) and smoke one now nice and slow.

That's acutally something I've found over the years. For whatever reason, Opus, Anejo, Diamond Crown Maximus, Don Carlos eg all the Opus variants seem to respond best for me if I smoke them more slowly than I smoke others. I tend to take my time with all cigars (no less than a minute between puffings), but again, these just seem to respond better, slower.

I agree with Andy, the med-fulls are probably your best shot. On the other hand, I just saw that your last smoke was a Nub. Nub=not for the tenderfoot. I also agree with the resting. I find Opus invariably benefits greatly from a good nap.

Re: Purchasing fuente fuente Opus X (Newbie)

If you're buying a whole bunch of cigars, then definitely pick up a few of these to age, but in my opinion if you're just getting started and want to learn about cigars, you're better off getting several cigars which are more economical to give you some variety and experience.
