Ever Notice A Coating in the Mouth from some Cigars?
In my branching out from Gurkha's (LOL) I had noticed that some cigars leave a coating in the roof of the mouth and on the tounge from the their smoke.
I just smoked a Royal Jamacia cigar from a sampler I purchased and it was a decent smoke (I would give it 6.5 out of 10) but from the time I started smoking it, even as I type now, I noticed a coating within my mouth that developed from the smoke... I also noticed this in another smoke, I believe it was an AVO Classic. I wonder if it is from the type of tobacco used, how it is processed, or something else? Hopefully not DDT!!! ![]() |

I once smoked an Orishas (Costa Rican), and afterwards it felt like I had a thick paste lining my mouth.

I would guess it's the smoke somehow interacting with your saliva. Why it happens with some cigars and not others is beyond me.

Re: Ever Notice A Coating in the Mouth from some Cigars?
I know in the old days when I was drinking adult beverages and smoking cheap cigars, I would wake up with a film in my mouth/tongue. Must have been the cigars. Had to brush my tongue(causing an immediate gag). Suspect these details are more than you wanted to see. Recently I did experience a coating in my mouth/on my tongue but never considered it a bad thing. Part of the 'gar life.

Re: Ever Notice A Coating in the Mouth from some Cigars?
Some cigars seem to leave a light film in your mouth that allows you to taste them for a couple hours afterwards. I find that if I drink plenty of water while I smoke that this doesn't seem to happen as much. The only time I have had a really thick unplesant film in my mouth have been times when I smoked large amounts of realy cheap cigars with adult beaverages, and been to "consumed" to remember to brush my teeth before I go to bed.

If it is only from some cigars, may be from a flavoring or preservation agent put on the tobacco. Fuente, for one, uses flavoring agents on their top line brands.

Re: Ever Notice A Coating in the Mouth from some Cigars?
That's what I was thinking along the line of Phantom...
I don't know all the steps that is involved in cigar manufacturing, but from what I think I remember, the tobacco is basically dried, then moistened, fermented in bales, then rolled.. Logic tells me that if only certain cigars have this characteristic, it could be the fermentation process, crummy water used, or as you indicated some type of preserving agent or perhaps some other chemicals. I do not believe it would be a result of a pure and natural tobacco product... Like I mentioned earlier, it wasn't a horrible smoke, just a very weird phenomenon I wish I could precisely pinpoint. I don't like that film effect though... |

I guess I'm lucky. I've never experienced it. If I am going out for dinner with others or having company, I will use a mouthwash. Not everyone likes stogie breath.

Re: Ever Notice A Coating in the Mouth from some Cigars?
interesting post.
I am smoking an AF Anejo right now and it is doing exactly that. Coating the mouth with something? not necessarily unplesant smoke. But not something I would look for or want in a good cigar. |

Re: Ever Notice A Coating in the Mouth from some Cigars?
Are you talking about a white film on the tongue?
If so I have a fun tid-bit. Everybodys tongue has small hairs on it and they usualy fall off after they reach a small hight, their natural color....white. I tend to have a white tongue after a heavy day of smoking or a night of heavy drinking and wake up dehydrated. SO my theory is such, heavy smoking/drinking both cause a dehydration losing water from your mouth your tongue most likely shrinks slightly and this would make the aforementioned hair appear longer, similar to after you die and your body dehydrates. Thats my theory
