Smoking=R Movie Rating
I remember hearing about this a while ago. Just food for thought.
Start quote: "Smoking in youth-rated movies has not declined despite a pledge two years ago by Hollywood studios to encourage producers to show less “gratuitous smoking,” according to an anti-smoking group. The American Medical Association Alliance has been trying to get movie studios to make smoking-free films. The American Medical Association Alliance, pointing to research that big-screen smoking leads teens to pick up the tobacco habit, called for an R rating for any movie with smoking scenes…. “Research has shown that one-third to one-half of all young smokers in the United States can be attributed to smoking these youth see in movies,” said Dr. Jonathan Fielding, head of the Los Angeles County Public Health Department. Fielding cited another study that he said “found that adolescents whose favorite movie stars smoked on screen are significantly more likely to be smokers themselves and to have a more accepting attitude toward smoking”…. Joan Graves, who chairs the Motion Picture Association’s movie rating committee, offered her own statistics, based on all of the 900 films rated each year, not just the top movies included in Fielding’s numbers. The association has given no G ratings in the past two years to a movie with smoking, Graves said…. “Any movie with smoking should be rated R,” [Fielding] said. “And if they worry about an R rating hurting their profits, then they should work with studios to remove smoking from films that hurt youth.” End quote.

Re: Smoking=R Movie Rating
What a bunch of horse hockey. I watch older films on Turner, and in most of those films, people are smoking very openly. If what he is saying is true, every adult over 40 in the United States would be smoking.
Ya gotta love the twisted logic the smoke nazis will resort to in support of their own agenda.

Re: Smoking=R Movie Rating
It's no real surprise that these researchers are pushing their findings and trying to get rid of smoking in our everyday lives (including movies).
I recently finished my undergrad degree in Earth Science (Geology), and in my field researchers are jumping all over the climate change/greenhouse research because: 1) It's a popular topic and will give them credibility in the community 2) There is a copious amount of funding availiable for people to conduct research in these areas. It's no different in the medical field...smoking is a hot topic right now and anyone who is doing research involving the effects of smoking are gaining credibility in their community and are easily obtaining the funding to do the research. Rarely will these researchers actually care about the effects of smoking, they are just riding the bandwagon while the money is still availiable. I'd even bet that some of them are avid smokers themselves! These are just my observations and opinions, but I've seen it happen in my field of work and I know it happens in others. Everyone flocks to where the money and popularity can be found! |

Candy? They already tell us eveyone is obese.
Soda? Proposed new "soda tax". Fast Food? No more "trans fats" (whatever they are). You might worry want to worry about a urine tax. That dirties up the environment, you know. My goodness. Can't make movies with smoking, but you can advertise (every 10 minutes) Viagra, Xtenze, etc. in PRIME TIME TELEVISION. What are these people thinking? From my perspective, it all started with seat belt laws and the infamous line, "If only one child can be saved..." BS! Personal decisions should be out of the hands of government.

Re: Smoking=R Movie Rating
Wasnt there a guy in Europe not so long ago who said that only Wagner was opera and only Beethoven was music? Why is it that some people only feel truly alive when they are controlling others?
Just makes me wonder what Thomas Jefferson might have said about smoking in movies.
