An up and down weekend

I was sitting by the fire pit with my neighbors on Sat. night and thought I'd try my first Oliva Serie O robusto. I had gotten with a taster pack and it had been in the humi about two months.

What a disappointment! The only way I could describe it is "bitter sawdust." Didn't even get through the first third before I tossed it in the fire. The other sticks I had in this taster pack were stored the same way and all were good. In fact, one was an Olive Serie G maduro that I loved.

So, I called on an old favorite standby -- a Punch Rothschild -- to salvage the evening. Whew!

Re: An up and down weekend

Glad you were able to find your go-2 to save the day. The Oliva Os that I have smoked were good, but I have experienced the same thing with other cigars. I just bought some RP sungrown earlier in the spring. The first one was bitter and charcoal tasting. I waited a couple of months before I smoked another, then, wow! Mucho improvement. Perhaps you had a young cigar? I don't know the science, only that my experience has so far proved that resting longer is better. Better luck next time.

That's interesting, cause last time I had that smoke it was great. Are Oliva's known to be inconsistent?

I've never met an Oliva I didn't like. That said, everyone can and does produce a turd. You simply cannot ensure perfection in every single stick. In most cases, I'd say, stay away and buy other smokes, but the Oliva's have been so good to me that I'd really recommend giving them another try.

Sorry to hear that. I haven't tried the 'O' series yet but I do enjoy the 'G'.

I have heard very little negative on their overall construction. From my reading and talking to people, I would say that Oliva is one of the more consistant manufacturers out there.

I agree with Herf n Terf.....every now and again everyone can produce a turd. Give that smoke another try.

Re: An up and down weekend

I'd say I would have to agree with Jim. I don't really think it's fair to judge a cigar by only smoking one. Now with that said I will not smoke another Padilla '68, sorry just did not like it. Damn I just contradicted myself.

Re: An up and down weekend

While they are 2 totally different smokes the Oliva Serie V and Serie O are my 2 favorite Olivas. Give it another shot, it is a good cigar.

Re: An up and down weekend

I'll certainly give these another chance. I agree that maybe I just got a bad stick. And I've enjoyed the other Olivas I've tried.

The same thing happened to me with a red wine that I like. I got one bad bottle, but I've had many good ones since. It happens.

Re: An up and down weekend

After hearing good things about Oliva, I also tried the O Robusto. I had the same experience as you, just plain unsmokeable. I liked the G and V series, and thought the O was a complete dud. Then, an Oliva rep gave me the same size for free at a B&M, and it was marvelous. The aroma was intoxicating, I wanted to bathe in it.

I remember both to be the same color, but now I suspect one was the maduro and the other an original. I have wanted to sample both again to find out which was which. Some day... some day...
