Yep...I agree with all the feedback. That's why I posted this thread. Of all the health dangers that exist, thats the best they could do...c'mon. I'm still ticked at the implication that cigar smokers do it cause celebrities make it "cool"....what a lack of knowledge. That is so far from the reason I enjoy my affection with cigars.

Thanks for posting that link to the article so others can read.

Damn you mean I don't look cool! What if I wear my pants under my a$$, get a bunch of tattoos, maybe carry a tube of my wives blood around my neck as I ride in my private jet and talk about global warming while I smoke my cigar. Then will I look cool?

Re: Parade article on cigar smoking (Sunday newspaper)

Does anyone have any links to articles/research/books that have ACTUAL research and data to back it up in regars to cigar smoking in particular? I've heard cigar buddies quote old studies that say cigar smoking isn't harmful in moderation, but I'd like to see the studies...and show them to my wife!

THanks guys.

" On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero. " - Narrator, 'Fight Club'.

All things considered, cigars are way low on my panic list.

One of the reasons I pretty much sat out the 'boom', was because 'everyone's doing it', which, by definition, means that it's not cool anymore. If celebrities are still smoking cigars in any significant numbers, they've been brow-beaten into keeping quiet about it, afraid to be associated with the Demon Weed.

Re: Parade article on cigar smoking (Sunday newspaper)

The "make you look cool" crap does not apply to me, as everyone else here. The reason I say this is because 99.99% of the time when I smoke a cigar, it's just me and the wife and we are behind closed doors.

Someone always has something to bit*h about. It's life. Great thread!

All follow ups well said. Moderation is the key, to all habits, hoby,s etc. To answer the question how cigar smoking can cause BLADDER cancer, the Nicotine goes into the Blood, Urine Stream. the bladder filters urine. ? What about the air we breathe ?, Look at the alarming rates of Asthma especially in the young.

Re: Parade article on cigar smoking (Sunday newspaper)

I have a friend who also happens to be an oncologist. His immediate circle of friends has a majority of doctors and health professionals. They all smoke cigars. And his immediate take on smoking cigars and the risk involved: You're just as likely to die from stress related illnesses. You're better off in general finding something that relaxes you, and of course, moderation.

Re: Parade article on cigar smoking (Sunday newspaper)

My retort to anyone who criticizes my smoking for health reasons is always two-fold, and will shut 95% of people up. 1-Do you drink alcohol? The health effects, not to mention social effects, are at least as bad as smoking a cigar. You tax your liver, and alcohol is just empty calories.

2-Are you overweight? (Like so many of our fellow citizens are, no big deal to me, BUT...)
Being fat is more atrocious for your health than just smoking, sorry pal. Health problems arising from obesity kill more people and cost us more in this country every year than cigar smoking.

I have a morbidly obese, diabetic aunt who ALWAYS harps on me for smoking cigars. The irony that she is admonishing me for being "unhealthy" is clearly lost on her, as it is on the vast majority of the PC-and-health police.

The other 5% of people who are thin, exercise nuts, and perfect eaters, well, good for them. They live a healthier lifestyle than me, big deal. For the vast majority of people, criticizing people for cigar smoking for health reasons is just the pot calling the kettle black.

Stay smoking, brothers.

Re: Parade article on cigar smoking (Sunday newspaper)

I read the article and I hapen to be a doctor as well. I find most of what is written in the article could be categorized as politically correct bull$hit. Moderate cigar smoking has not been linked to significant health risks. A cigar helps me unwind and remove dreadful stress, which is probably more deleterious to my health than nicotine. Even though nicotine is absorbed through the oral mucosa, it is a known fact cigars are not as adicting as cigarettes. I smoke in the privacy of my backyard, visible only to my dog (who does believe I'm the coolest guy in the world). I don't advice my children to join in the habit but then again, if they do decide to do it on their own as adults they are free to proceed. Just my 2 cents worth...

Thanks for that, Doc! Do you have links to any research that has been done on this...you state that "moderate cigar smoking has not been linked to significant health risks" and I've heard that before, but I'd love to be able to have the study in-hand to show the wife...she's also a doctor, just finishing her residency, and all she knows is the PC crap that even the medical community gets fed these days which lumps all "smoking" into the same category.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated! Thanks!

Re: Parade article on cigar smoking (Sunday newspaper)

Jedipastor:

Here's a link to a very interesting summary of the available literature

Cigars and Cancer, 2002 Study

There is a lot of reading here. An interesting point they make is the association with GI tract cancer has been connected to the use of alcoholic drinks while smoking the cigar. Most of the positive studies though talk about daily cigar smoking, usually more than just 1 cigar/day. I still suspect this infotmation will be insufficient to persuade your wife in your favor. Good luck!
