Parade article on cigar smoking (Sunday newspaper)

I was just wondering how many BOTL/SOTL saw the article in Parade in Sunday's newspaper. It came to my attention when the wife thrust it in my face saying..."Hear, you need to read this!". Anyway, the doctor who wrote the article was stating some of the usual things like cigars have more nicotine than cigs, even if not inhaled can cause medical conditions, and so on. I guess what irked me the most was the assertion that people who smoke cigars do it because it's "cool" and because celeberties do it. Granted, the long term affects of smoking will always be debated but when balanced against the other "chemicals", pollutants, and idiot drivers, I think my cigar hobby is a far safer indulgence to enjoy.

I anyone else saw that same article, I would be curious to know your opinion of it.

Re: Parade article on cigar smoking (Sunday newspaper)

I didnt read it but here are my thoughts..we ALL -every single human- have our own vices and we have since the dawn of time. drugs, pot, alcohol, food, sugar, gambling, smoking, sex, you name it. Why is that? Because humans genetically need means to cope with life, stress, and need a way to relax and unwind. I really believe it is critical that we all have our own means of unwinding and relaxing and blowing off steam. Anything done to excess is bad - we all know that. But it should be up to each individual so long as it doesnt infringe on the rights of others to decide for themselves.

I have not read this article. But I am sure it is like most others saying cigars are worse than cigarettes. But by now, everyone knows that smoking isn't healthy for you. Just like eating fast food, drinking alcohol, and so forth, but we still do it anyway. I am pleased to say that I smoke because it is relaxing to me. I do not do it to be or to look cool. It is a hobby of mine, just like it is for everyone else. It just irritates me a little bit to know that this crap keeps coming up everywhere, when everyone knows it already and is contradictory (is that a word?) to everything else we know and do in life.

"Smoke cigars to look cool"??? What?

I am fully aware that I look like an IDIOT when Im smoking a cigar. My jaw's all cocked open in some unnatural shape (depending on RG) and in most cases, I have the stunned look of a deer in the headlights from the nicotine and sheer amazement at the flavor. I don't care what I look like. I just love smoking cigars!

As far as health considerations, the minute they come up with something more damaging than spending an hour talking to a teenager, I will stop smoking cigars.

Somebody I work with read that and thought of me so she brought it to work and handed it to me. Not even half way through it I was thinking what I was going to smoke next. Freedom of speech and choice. I use MY free will the way I want to.

The cleaner I use to scrub the floor is probably bad for me if I inhale it, but I don't, just like I don't inhale cigars.

Re: Parade article on cigar smoking (Sunday newspaper)

The article is rubbish, and clearly written for children, and those who believe everything they read without proof and data. Not a single footnote or source in the entire article, not a single assertion backed up with hard facts. Just the same tired generalized statements that have been around for decades.

My intellect tells me that NOT inhaling a few natural tobacco hand rolled cigars per week (the norm for the average cigar smoker) is FAR less dangerous than inhaling/smoking 13 chemical laden paper cigarettes PER DAY (the norm for the average cigarette smoker according to the 2002 National Survey on Drug Use and Health). And it's going to take a lot more than hand waving BS like that article to convince me.

Come to the table with real facts or kindly STFU.

Another undocumented article in one of the great research magazines: Parade, Reader's Digest, Redbook, Home and Garden, etc.

That is EXACTLY what I thought.

I'm not ignorant to the fact that there is some negative to the hobby but, to that I must go along with Mr. Caputo's statement.
