Re: CI Daily Deal question - Which Gurkhas?
Why bother to even suggest it - isn't better to stomp on every Gurkha thread and say how much they suck! Here's a novel idea, why don't all the guys who hate them start a thread of their own about how awful they are. Or better yet, instead of the blanket statements of how bad all of them are. Why don't you point out specifically the ones you have had and the drawbacks you have noted. For example, Extra Fuerte profile I am not crazy about despite being plugged as having a good amount of Nicaraguan filler, and my preference is Nicaraguan flavor profiles. And the wrappers tend to crack. I was surprised because I like costa rican sticks (eg., Don Tuto and Buccanero) and the Fuertes have a Costa Rican Maduro Wrapper. Blacks are smoother to me. Are Gurkhas overpriced at retail - absolutely. Are there a stupid amount of frontmarks - no doubt. All that be given, I doubt all the naysayers have tried every Gurkha out there, but at CBID prices there are some that are more than acceptable for what they are. What am I doing. Like I told Jerry - why should I bother. I think I'll join in with all the cool guys - "ALL GURKHAS SUCK!!"

![]() ![]() ![]() (Figure I should stop lurking once in a while to stir the pot with Joe) A Ghurka is a low end Torano-made cigar in high end packaging. While I wouldn't buy one at retail price, the Ghurkhas at Cbid prices can be quite good. I find it quite funny when people who praise Toranos jump on the "all Ghurkas suck" bandwagon. For those that don't know, K. Hansotia readily admits he isn't a cigar maker but a marketer. Unlike Patel he doesn't do photo shoots tending "his" (Plascencia's) tobacco fields and barns. Hansotia started with watches as I recall, and bought the Gurkha brand name for around $150. He started selling dry cured flavored cigars that would fit on counters when his brand couldn't get humidor space during the boom. When other companies couldn't fill humidors he was there asking to have his products put in their place. He worked hard marketing and it paid off. Hansotia has used and created more packaging techniques than any brand on the market. No matter how good his marketing; if the cigars were as bad as many of you claim they would not be in soo many cigar stores. I smoked some form of Ghurka Monday afternoon. It was some form of XL robusto ~5.5x54, had 3 bands and a cedar sleeve. The cigar offered sweet nuts and pepper and was quite smooth. I have been smoking the hell out of Habano '00 Punch Coronas and '00 Le Hoyo Du Rois lately, and had thrown this Ghurka into my cigar caddy for a change. No suprise that the Gurkha had no complexity compared to the 9 year old Habanos; however the flavor was nonetheless enjoyable. The construction quality and burn of the Ghurka was far better than what I have experienced in the (cheap) Cubans I buy. If you want to avoid smoking the brand, fine; but lets try to avoid knocking an entire cigar brand unless you have tried them all. If Tom is still around he has tried most of them and still doesn't like them; an educated naysayer I whose opinion I respectfully disagree with. ;-) The rest of you seem lemmings to me. -Matt- Last edited by txmatt; 06-25-2009 at 09:41 AM.. |

I've tried 90% of them and they just do not do a thing for me. I don't care for Torano either. If your a Gurkha whore and that's what you like, then great. Opinions are like a$$ holes, we all have one. Smoke up all the Gurkhas and leave the Pepin's for me!
