The start of a wonderful relationship.
Hello all. I’ve been reading these forums for a while but this is my first post. The post is kinda long but I felt like I had to tell somebody. So here goes. I’ve recently quit smoking cigarettes…I think it’s been about a month now. I was having some trouble because I normally get home late at night and the way I use to relax was to sit out side and smoke like a fiend. So one night I was surfing the web and came across and interview with Sly Stalone on Cigar aficionado. I know this is kinda cheesy but the way he described smoking a cigar was enough to sell me on the habit even before I had smoked a cigar. So this is where I go wrong…I went to the gas station (I know I know) and picked up a Garcia Vega. Needless to say it wasn’t what I was expecting. This wasn’t at all what he described, it was foul, bitter and smelled like shit. So about a week later I came across this site, after reading some peoples experiences and their takes on certain cigars I knew I had to give it one more go. So I picked up a Fuente…not sure what size it was…it lasted about 3 hours though. Anyway…not that impressive (not to me anyway.) Another week passes, I was still reading these boards and I thought to my self, “I just don’t understand what the big deal is.”
Today I drove by a Tobacco shop and had a $20 on me so I thought I’d give it one last chance. I bought a Fuente Special, a Macanudo Hampton Court and a Punch…I smoked them all. Couldn’t stop, now I understand. The Punch was spicy and warm, the Fuente was really nice as well and the Macanudo was amazing, great smoke, great smell, great taste and a nice draw. I think this is the start of wonderful (expensive) relationship. …I think I remember reading something about a slope?

Re: The start of a wonderful relationship.
Congrats on quiting smoking.
I started with Swishers and other "behind the drugstore counter" smokes like you and a lot of people did. There's no shame in how you learn and now you know that 7-eleven is not where you go to get a cigar. You will grow as an enthusiast - it's already started with your experimentation of some good sticks and there will seem like there are a million more to try. Some will taste like s#!t to you and others will be good. You're inventory is all about YOU and what you like. The guys talk about Opus X, Ashton, etc. (and those are good), but you don't have to break your wallet to enjoy a quality cigar. I have some high priced cigars in my humidors, but my favorite "go to" is a Saint Luis Rey Rothchild Maduro, which runs about $3.00 a stick and I even really like the "megacheap" Flor de Oliva ($40.00 for a bundle of 25 - my opinion, one of the best budget cigars out there). Enjoy the ride.

Welcome to the jungle!
Although this hobby/passion/lifestyle can be expensive, I think you'll find you can smoke one good cigar a day for the same price as a cig habit. The rewards are much greater!

Re: The start of a wonderful relationship.
I too quit smoking cigarettes recently. You can find lots of smaller cigars to satisfy your carving for nicotine which helps me. There are a few topics on smaller cigars in this forum which I’m sure if you use the search feature you’ll stumble across them. My favorite little sticks are CAO Brazillia Cariocas or Piranha. Enjoy your stay here.

Victim:
Welcome to da jungle. I am happy for you on winning your battle with the evil weeds. I am still in need of quitting myself. There are so many more good things about cigars than cigarettes. I ask you to wish me luck.
