Whats wrong with some people??

Ive taken a break from the devil site for almost a year now... and now that im looking for some more boxes of sticks that i know the exclusivly carry, ive had my eye on the site just about everyday... theres people out there EXTREMLY over paying for things on that site... I hope its none of the fellow BOTL's here... are these people stupid? or just to lazy to shop around?

prime example... i wanted a box of AF sungrowns that i was shocked to see go on the devil site last week $95!!!! when CI (who is the backer of the devil site) sells the box for 85 plus free shipping... this is just an example though i see it all over the place..

what the hell is wrong with some of you people out there!! haha

I see that a lot, I always suspected it was themselves or the employees bidding on their own product. Not sure but I really do not think most smokers would really over pay on some of those sticks or any for that matter. Sometime you can good deals at JR Cigars auctions.

Sometimes I wonder If people aren't in it just for the gamble. What else explains it. If your gonna shop at cbid its because your a deal hound, which to me implies that you've shopped around to see going prices. I just laugh when I see those bids reaching retail. The economy is hurting, but folks are still paying prime $ for a gar!

Re: Whats wrong with some people??

There may be some colusion going on, but I think it's mostly ignorance/laziness/complacency. People have become so accustomed to getting deals on there, they don't bother to check pricing anymore. I learned the hard way. I had asked my regular B&M to get some Oliva. I made a bid one morning on a fiver of something. Just out of sheer coincidence, I popped by the B&M (mgr is a friend) just cuz. She had ordered and received the entire LINE, and was selling them below what I had just bid. I had looked around online to make sure my bid was still in the "deal" catagory, but had I bought them from her, I'd have saved $1.78. Not a big deal, but a lesson learned.

Famous' Auctioneer site at least has a bot that informs you if youre bid is higher than their regular selling price. I think CI should do this.

And The Party Source.... many times I've found their prices kill Cbid lows.
Got a box of Camacho MMM 6x60 for $146 , DPG El Centurions for $135, Ashton Heritage Puro Sol Belicoso for $165 etc.. of course these were pre S-CHIP prices but still they actually have sales there and if you call them at the right time you can get some killer deals

Re: Whats wrong with some people??

I think some people are simply out of their mind. Yes I do use c-bid, but I do get frustrated with some of the bidders. I had guy bid $38.00 for 10 Gurkha's, where the quickbuy was $27.50?!?

The other annoyance, is when you see someone grab all the quantities... e.g. they have 10 five packs of "pick your brand" and they bid beyond stupid on all 10 packages!?! That truly makes me wonder.....

I don't know if CI would bid up on their products on c-bid, it certainly is possible, but would be very unethical... Who knows???

I do think there are bidding junkies, people who have money throw around, and there are some that just don't understand the functionalties of c-bid.

For me, once the price has passed beyond a good deal, I simply don't bid or lose out and try again...

I can say I have gotten some pretty decent deals there though, and while I do support the local merchant when I want to try a new cigar or want one immediately I certainly will spend there, but for financial reasons, I am forced to use c-bid, CI, JR, or whoever has the best deals...

Re: Whats wrong with some people??

With all the new taxes and such of late, I think more and more cigar smokers are being forced online to find deals. For people who are into auctions, cbid is like crack. But even though most people are NOT into auction sites, the times being what they are, people are willing to go for it.

As far as paying MORE than retail...sometimes people don't have good shops around or can't find a particular cigar anywhere. Also, some people are just addicted to auctions or to winning all cost...not realizing that they could get it cheaper on one of the discount sites (though usually those bids are still under the retail price you'd pay in a shop).

Re: Whats wrong with some people??

its the mentality of bidding. some people just cant stand to lose... same reason some people end up spend 125 million on a painting. for some, the process of bidding and winning fills a void and provides a thrill.

Re: Whats wrong with some people??

I see that on ebay as well. Some of it is sham bidding, but hard to prove. Most of it though are people who get to involved with the winning syndrom that they don't step and say "huh?". I've also noticed a trend upwards in winning bids. Almost to the point of not being worth it. Heck I can buy 5 of most anything from Tampa Humidor, with free shipping.

Re: Whats wrong with some people??

I will only pay a little over half of the regular price listed on CI. I bid and set the price I'm willing to pay and If I lose the bid I'll try again on the next auction. I've always wonder why people would pay almost full price or over. I guess some people like throwing money away.

Re: Whats wrong with some people??

I set my target around 60% of CI's regular price, and very occasionally up to 70%. Their regular prices and selection are so vastly better than I can do locally, if something is a "must have" I don't even screw around with c-bid, I just buy it. I went a little C-Bid nuts, back in the Winter, but I have only bid on a handful of items in the last few months, and haven't won anything since February.

I'm extremely well-stocked, right now. I just had to set up a second 150-qt cooler to hold the overflow from the first one, which was jammed full. I had a couple hundred cigars in Tupperware, and another 50 on the way, so I thought it was time. I'm pretty freakin' happy about it all. An embarrassment of riches is the kind I don't mind having.

Some of those over-bidders should be wearing a P.O.T.P. shirt!
