Two days, two bad sticks
I received a small shipment of a few fivers a few days ago and yesterday decided to try one. It was a Gurkha black puro. I had previously smoked one that was bombed to me and I liked it so I was expecting a decent smoke. To say that It didn't fit my enjoyment profile is an understatement. The stick appeared to be well made and firm but I could not keep an even burn on it. I had to touch it up and burn off the canoe that kept forming and the taste was not at all pleasant. From the beginning it tasted like and ashtray and never improved. I had to dump it at about 3-1/2 inches or so. The only reason I let it go that far was I kept thinking it would improve. I'm hoping it was a bad one.
The next disaster was this afternoon. I lit up an Oliveros Padrone torpedo. It looked nice. Dark and smooth and well constructed. The burn was very good but the flavor was not there. I mean it was like smoking tea leaves or steam or something I've never had before. The ads say hints of this and that and believe me, that's all there was. It didn't even taste like tobacco and I'm not kidding. I thought that maybe as it burned down it would pick up a little oomph, but all it did was get bitter. The flavor never appeared. The only thing noticeable about it was some pepper through the nose, but no taste. I could not finish it. Ugh twice! |

Re: Two days, two bad sticks
While I've never had those 2 specific cigars, and therefore cannot comment on your specific experiences, sometimes that's just the way it goes. Sometimes it's a bum stick, sometimes it's a grumpy mood, other times it's bad storage conditions, sometimes it's a skewed palate. Whatever it is though, sometimes the smoke just doesn't work. Did you have a cold or a sniffle that day? Get in a fight with your significant other? Eat something really strong or off your normal menu? I've found all of those things can take the most solid go to stick and turn it into a dog rocket. It's a bummer when it happens, but it's also a good justification for buying 5 packs instead of singles when trying a new stick. Another stick, another set of circumstances. Sometimes, when I have a streak of off smokes, I'll go out of my way to get into a routine that I know works for a smoke (say, some good bbq, a movie on the laptop, a good cup o joe, and tried and tested smoke).
Here's hoping your next stick is a solid nubber!

Re: Two days, two bad sticks
Sorry to hear that you had a few bad ones. Go grab one of your go to smokes and smoke it. I do that if I run into a bad smoke and I immediatly feel better

Re: Two days, two bad sticks
The turd potential is why I try not to smoke new-to-me cigars at times I only have time to smoke one cigar. I recently smoked my first example of a VERY well liked cigar on here and found it to be flat, mono-dinmensional and an utter disaster. Had I not had the time to jump into a go-to, I might have just abandoned the hobby altogether.

Re: Two days, two bad sticks
I bought a box of Victor Sinclairs based on some reviews that put this cigar right up my alley. The first one I smoked was horrible and I thought I would give these away. Waited a few days and tried again, what a difference! Everything I had hoped for showed up in the stick.

Re: Two days, two bad sticks
I hear ya,,,I did the same things with a couple of cigars in the past two days and they were Dog Rockets for sure. I bought a couple of 5 paks because I like to try new ones occassionally,,,broaden my horizons so to speak. Well, my horizon was showing a mushroom cloud that let me know that I smoked the wrong cigar,,,but I persevered and smoked it down so that I at least gave it a real chance. The other 4 from the 5pak will be going to a better place.

Re: Two days, two bad sticks
Talking about canoeing and tasting off makes it sound to me like the sticks may have been WET. Many online shops (like CI/Cbid) will over-humidify their cigars before shipping in an attempt to compensate for rH that may be lost during the shipping process. But usually they go too far (and if the weather is humid at the time, it will be even worse!). I know I've experienced this before.
Also, I'm always suprised at how much better cigars will get after just a few weeks in my tupperdor...sometimes after 2 months they seem like totally different cigars (in a good way). So don't toss them in the "to be traded" pile just yet. My 2 cents ![]() |

Re: Two days, two bad sticks
Thats actually a good point Jedi, I like to wait a few weeks before I dig into a shipment... as hard as it can be especially when you get a new release (for me I cracked just two weeks after I got my Man O War Ruinations) it will be worth it. Just smoke what you have and then when you finally get around to it, your patience will be rewarded.
