FWIW Anyone else have this experience

Often I start having burn problems when down to the last 1\4 of a cigar. Not all the time but like I said often. I read alot in the last 2 months on this site (great and informing) and other sites. Which brings me to the point of purging the cigar. From what people were saying it helps even out the burn issues. Well to much to my surprise they were dead on. But besides correcting a bad burn it also took away that bitter taste and the heat that comes at the end of a cigar. Giving the cigar a little purge before I took a draw the flavor was much better and the burn was alot cooler.

I'm in the habit of purging after every 3 or 4 draws.

Yep, you're not the only one Lou. I'm no expert, but from what I've read and can remember, I think it has something to do with tar building up throughout the cigar. Purging helps alleviate that built up tar, and often times you will experience a greater flavor if you do so.

I generally ash my stick at about an inch (unless the ash seems un-stable). I am in the habit of purging the cigar after the ashing. As a word or warning: Purging with the ash at or near one inch will almost always loosen the ash, and will often result in a shirt pocket or a lap full of hot ash! I generally say bad words when I fail to ash before purging, cause 90 times out of 100, I get the chance to clean ash off my shirt or pants afterwards!

I find that purging has also reduced the number of sticks that tunnel on me.

I've found purging especially useful for resuscitating cigars that don't seem to want to stay lit. I had to do this last night to a Perdomo Estate Seleccion that had burned perfectly until the last third and it worked perfectly.

Re: FWIW Anyone else have this experience

Purging works for resucitating cigars that are getting nasty. I do it after every ashing by blowing back out through the cigar for 5-10 seconds. You can also do it with ash on, but as SvilleKid says, it can loosen the ash.

I haven't found that I've needed to do it more than 3-5 times total even for a churchill.

Yes, purging is good. I had a stick that got a little bitter & hot on me. One purge later the good flavor was back and I didn't have a burning palate.

Wow, sound like alot of you do this. I have done it a few times, didn't really notice anything different.

Also remember to keep turning your cigar after each draw. The burn should correct itself, in most cases.

Lou
This is a great tip. I've been doing this whenever the flavor starts to peter out or turn bitter. Works great! I wish I'd known about this years ago.

I agree with what is stated above. Purging will make the difference in a good cigar and a great cigar.
