another mold thread
Well I don't get it. I keep everything in my vinotemp and it has been holding a rock steady 67% and around 65 to 70 degrees. But to day I open it up and find about 15 to 29 of my cigars are covered with mold. It only seems to have effected a half a drawer that I had dedicated to cigars without the cello on them. so far everything else looks ok do I need to pull everything and clean out the whole vino or will just pulling the effected sticks be enough? Right now I have pulled the ones with mold and put them in a storage bag. Man I hate that lost maybe a third of my collection.

Re: another mold thread
Sorry to hear about your loss--Have you calibrated your Meters? I would do the salt test first--
Mix 1 tablespoon of salt with just enough to make a paste. Put this in a small container like a bottle cap Put the bottle cap and your hygrometer in a Ziploc style baggie with enough free standing air that neither touch the other Now double bag the whole thing wait EIGHT hours-----don't cheat at 4, really wait 8 The exact humidity in the bag is now 75% ----- If not adjust your hygrometer accordingly double check if necessary (yeah, wait 8 hours again) you'll now have a calibrated hygrometer Hope this helps! |

Re: another mold thread
The cigars may not be lost. Check the foot of the cigar for mold. If there is none in the foot then you should be able to simply wipe them off with a soft cloth or brush. If it is in the foot then clip the foot off about 1/8 - 1/4 of an inch and if it is not there anymore they will be ok to smoke.
After wiping the mold off I would leave them seperated from the rest of your cigars for about 2 weeks. If no sign of the mold reappears then re-introduce them back into the family. PS- When doing the salt test described above I would recommend waiting 24 - 36 hours to make sure the hygro has stabilized.

Re: another mold thread
^^^ Agree with above. Neither of my hygros have come even close to being stabalized after 8 hours. 24 hours at least in my opinion.

Are you using beads in the vino?
Are you wiping out the moisture that pools around the heat sink? If using the beads are all the beads clear? If the beads are not clear and there's no condensation, anyone know why the humidity would spike in a vino using beads ? Becuase regardless if the hydro is accurate or not, this should never have happened? no? there is another cause here, the hydro does not dictate or control the environment the cigars are in........ Fix the root of the problem first and foremost |

Re: another mold thread
yeah its mold grey powdery all over them including the foot. I am wondering if in trading I may have introduced one or two that may have already had some mold. yes I use beads in the vino. And I try not to open it to often. I don't see anything on the cedar drawer but still worried about spores, paranoid now I guess. Anyway thanks everyone.

Re: another mold thread
That just sucks, brother. I had a very slight mold issue with three Diamond Crown Maximus robustos I bought from a local several months ago. It was only slight and only around the cap. I wiped them down with a soft cloth and replaced the cello. I put them in quarantine for a month and nothing came back. They are once again resting with the rest of the supers in the bottom of my box.

Re: another mold thread
I had a couple of the Spanish Galleon freebies Atlantic cigar throws in to most orders have what looked to be mold underneath the cedar sleeves - sporadic clusters, not uniform & bluish in color - they turned out to be great tasting cigars. Dramatically better than the previous SG cigars I smoked. Almost boggles the mind...
