Storage in Box, open, or closed box

When storing cigars, ? open, or closed box.
I have read if you keep cigars in closed box, in humi. the cigars will give off a AMMONIA odor and cigars will absorb same ?.
when i store, i use a push pin to keep lid open somewhat. its a pain in the but, as it cost me humi space. i am thinking of removing lids to gain space. any oppinions, experiances
thanks A J.

Re: Storage in Box, open, or closed box

Save time and space store them closed - everyone else does

Seems all big suppliers, retailers, and so on store them closed unless they are on display for sale.

Cubans are know to have an ammonia smell now and then but this will happen with the box closed or open its all good and part of the process (or so I am told)

Rest relax and smoke don't worry about the small stuff

Most store them closed. I store them closed for the most part but for some that seem to be airtight I put a very small spacer under the lid to let air in and out. Not enough to make stacking a problem - maybe 1/16". Another thing you can do to prevent ammonia building up is occasionally open the boxes to provide some air exchange (and it gives you a chance to drool over the sticks).

If you are looking to age them longer term it is generally accepted the less air exchange the more benifical it will be.

I think that's true for cubans but not sure about nc's, since there's some debate about whether nc's benefit from long term aging.

Sorry my bad even after years on the american cigar forums I still assume everyone smokes cubans.

You are correct the information I provided is based only on generally accepted practises with cuban cigars. I have little to no knowledge on nc - I jump to conclusions and assume they should be treated the same.

I store my boxes closed but the CC dress boxes tend to open up just a bit once you pull the nail out.

Re: Storage in Box, open, or closed box

depending on the box I will use the hinge to prop it open a little, I used to use business cards to keep them open (I read this tip in a cigar mag. a long time ago) and would rotate the stock every few months, since joining this site I have learned this is either not necessary or - like just about anything - just a matter of preference, I have not noticed a difference either way
