Lightbulb Cigar Budgets As Seen By Non-Smoking Spouses

Several recent threads I've looked at led me to start pondering on this. I think that it's a genetic thing passed on through the generations that *all* females assume that a proper and fair yearly cigar budget is about $50.00. On the other hand, most cigar smoking males would think that a fair yearly budget for cigars is around $50,000.00.

Now this is the part where we must become clever enough to trick the female of the species. Buy her flowers and a nice card, perhaps dinner at one of those wear-a-tie type of restaurants. Dancing afterwards even. Then volunteer to be a completely understanding partner to her, recognize her need to be part of the decisions you both make, and state you'll be most willing to split the difference on the cigar budget.

Heh. If it was up to my girlfriend she'd bring my cigar allowance down to $0. Heh. She hates anything that can be smoked. Other than a Hookah. Ithink about $500 a year isn't a bad allowance for "once a week" smoker.

Re: Cigar Budgets As Seen By Non-Smoking Spouses

My wife used to bust my hump about the amount of cigars I started to accumulate. Her famous line when I would get more would be " You already have enough to last you the rest of your life" (Heh, if she only saw DaKlugs collection ) She is pretty good about it now though. She even sometimes asks questions about them, like the different shapes and why some have darker wrappers than others. My birthday is coming up this week and when she was asking what I wanted she asked me if there were any "Nice Cigars" I wanted for my birthday or a "Nice new humidor." So I have to give her credit she has come around, and I noticed that it has been since I have finally got it through her head that smoking a cigar or two a week is not nearly as dangerous cancer wise as smoking cigarettes. Plus she teaches spanish and loves everything about the cultures so now that she sees me asking what certain words in cigar names mean in spanish I guess she is happier that I have taken an interest in spanish a bit. Keep in mind I smoked cigars long before I even met her, so hopefully to all the other BOTLs out there your wives too will come around.

Re: Cigar Budgets As Seen By Non-Smoking Spouses

There was a thread a while back about whether or not you hid your cigar purchases from your spouse. At that time I answered that I didn't necessarily hide them but didn't go out of the way to advertise them either. Of course at the time I was merely perched at the top of the slippery slope. Now that I'm tumbling down head over heels, I think it would be best to revise your thread title to....Cigar Budgets Best Left Un-Seen By Spouses (Non-Smoking or otherwise).

The topic of cigar purchases and cigar budgets is typically a lose/lose situation. Sort of like the topic of..."Honey, do these pants make make me look fat?"

My wife is unconcerned about my cigar budget. She expects parity, however.

Re: Cigar Budgets As Seen By Non-Smoking Spouses

My fiance knows that I smoke about once a week, which is actually true. But, I don't think that she knows just how many I have in my collection. (My collection is pathetic compared to most of yours, but more that she thinks I need). I have been trying to ease her into my collection by telling her about trades and things. As far as my budget goes...it is not too bad really. I haven't slid down the slope too far yet.

Pah... try both. Budget blown to hell. Mine buys pocket books and shoes.... I buy stogies. That is my happy medium. She doesn't ask me about my cigar spending habits, and I don't ask her about her shoe/pocket book spending habits.

Now if she actually SAW my cigar spending budget I could hear it now...

"Do you know all the SHOES I could have bought with that?"

I think that is said perfectly. Go ahead and spend what you want on cigars but don't complain about the many trips to the mall either.

I bought my GF a dozen roses the same day my new humidor came in the mail. First thing she says to me, "I see you bought yourself something too". HAHAH

Really no need for tricks, since the wife receives all deliveries at home. I just figured that my budget is still meager compared with the amount I spend on maintaining our household.
