Re: What's your rating system?

You can read a few of my reviews and get the general idea. I like to tell folks everything about what theyre getting into. Who made it, what shape is it, wrapper, binder, filler, draw tension, construction, price paid, where I smoked it and what I drank with it. If I actually throw a number down, it's generally based on a 1-10 scale. I like to think I dont smoke anything below a 5/10.

Beyond that, It's all pretty subjective. I know guys who have forgotten more than I will ever know about cigars and all they say they ever taste is "tobacco". I love to cook, so I guess I tend to relate certain tobacco flavors to my familiarity with foods and spices. These "analogues" may, or may not be accurate. No one, to my knowledge, actually puts leather in a cigar. The only people I know, who have actually ever suck on leather, are baseball players and cowboys. What the hell is "earthiness"? How many people here really eat Dominican, or Honduran dirt? From my understanding, Cuba is running out of dirt, so you can probably only order it, ala carte, at this moment.

In the end, I just want the reader to get the true jist of the cigar. If it's something really outstanding, I want all of you to get one and try it. If it's a yawn, save your money and spend on a GO-TO.

Agreed! I can see how it may be informative to review one's notes on a particular cigar, but I would much prefer to spend that time lighting up another one! To each their own...

Even if my first experience with a cigar isn't so hot, I give it another shot or two. If I still don't like it past then, then I will not smoke them.

I see a lot of reviews where people rate half the cigars they smoke under a 50 out of 100 or something like that. Here's a hint, you are either picking the few dozen god awful cigars out there or you don't like smoking cigars.

For me, I enjoy almost every cigar I have. Its all about to what degree to I enjoy them.

Re: What's your rating system?

I always just tag a rating at the end of my reviews of F to A with A being the best... F being a failure. i usually grade my overall experience with the cigar draw, flavor, aroma. Value plays a little into it but not alot.

I stole your sheet, hope you don't mind.

I think I'll just change a few of the numbers for my own use & I'm good to go!

I don't ask for much in royalties.

j/k I am glad someone else got some use out of it. The sheet was actually made by another BOTL who used to post here.

I feel that Value or the amount you paid for the cigar should never affect the cigars score

I can see where you are coming from, but don't expectations come into play? One of my main questions is "would I purchase again?" If you are choosing between two similar quality choices with a $10+ price difference, what would you do? I guess that is the trouble with ratings and criticism. It is hard to be objective about something so subjective. Oh well, smoke anothe just to be sure

Agreed. While you don't want to be thinking " this is a $25 stogie, i better freaking like it" you also don't want to do the opposite. Value shouldn't play a role in how much you enjoy a particular cigar, but it may play a role in how many you smoke.

For example: I love the Monte Media Noche, if I could I'd have boxes of them stashed away & smoke them til I turn green. But the Onyx Reserve is quite similar, for about half the price or less. If I could I'd buy more Monte's, but I'm on a budget, so "bang" for my "buck" is very important to me.

Just my take on things.

P.S. if only I had enough money to smoke my favorites all the time!

Re: What's your rating system?

So, it seems most of you don't like long-winded reviews or a numerical rating.. Mine are all pretty much like that, sorry! Should I take it back a notch? I write them that way cuz that's how I like 'em. I like to read a long descriptive review with lots of flowery words and a detailed flavor and aroma profile, so I figured others did, too. I enjoy hunting for different flavors and textures (real or imagined, but all real at least for me) in the smoke, and I enjoy reading what others taste. But since I'm not writing my reviews for myself, but for the rest of the community, maybe I should keep it short and simple.
As far as the numbers go, I find it hard to put into perspective ALL the aspects of smoking a stick after I'm finished so I use it to keep myself focused on the task of reviewing. I use it for maybe the 1st & 2nd time I smoke something new, then enjoy the rest as they should be enjoyed. But again, if no one wants to hear it, I'll cut them from my future reviews.. Let me know what you guys think so I can hopefully make my reviews more fun to read for all. Thanks!

The more descriptive the reviews the better I like them personally. I like reading a review on a stick I am smoking and see if I am picking up the same things.

I don't think that is true at all. We all like a review to be as detailed as possible. I just don't like WRITING long winded reviews.

I definitely agree here. For me, i either like or dont.
i really try not to let price play to much into it. But there are sticks that cost 2 bucks and sticks that cost 20+ and i like them, not because they are expensive or cheap, but because they please my palate.
