Re: Flavors of What?!?
Good point. Many of the darker spirits we enjoy are flavored and aged in oak casks. That is, in fact, where the color comes from. The barrels are dried then flame charred and the white liquor is put in. This is where I get my sense of oak, or "oakiness".
I can't wait to use, "delicate notes of musky rhubarb with velvety hints of rubber." ![]()

Re: Flavors of What?!?
Blaylock, that chart got me cracking up big time! My favorite listing was "Pencil wood" LMAO! Can you imagine this description:
"The cigar starts with notes of pencil wood and rubber and a slint hint of mineral dust. After that I put it down! Yuck!" Rev. |

Re: Flavors of What?!?
Rev, I have actually tasted pencil wood in cigars before. Usually in Hondurans. It is not all that unpleasant. It is another one of those "memory" things. Reminds me of when I was in school and chewed on pencils.

Re: Flavors of What?!?
I didn't see dog manure on the flavor wheel but I have certianly heard enough puff.com posters refer to some bad cigars as having such characteristics....
Pencil, Charcoal, I have certainly experienced that in the Sherpa... As for earthy, smoking enough cigars to be able to identify that note, my point was more in jest as the OP indicated, e.g. how many people eat soil or dead leaves... That particular "flavor wheel" profile is not one I particularly enjoy... |

Re: Flavors of What?!?
My apologies...
I do see that manure is on the flavor wheel!?! Jeez!!! If there is ever a cigar manufacturer that publishes that as a note or profile, I wonder how long it would take before they file for chapter 11... |

Re: Flavors of What?!?
I know when we first get into cigars all the reviews seem a little bit like pretentious gobbleegook, but why immediately jump to the conclusion that its all b.s.? Over the years I have discovered many things about cigars and also about how I taste, and how much of that is also connected to the sense of smell. Flavor descriptors are useful as comparisons. Thats what they are; comparison and contrast to other physically occurring substances.
There may be some who when reviewing a cigar, intentionally try to gin up obscure basis for comparison, --but they are the exception. I have humbled myself in order to try to experience what I believe others have sincerely found in one cigar or another. If its b.s., I trust my own judgement to come to a conclusion in time. Personally, I choose imaginative descriptors over using the word cigar as an adjective.

Re: Flavors of What?!?
It's definitely not all BS. It can be quite hard to describe the tastes of a certain cigar without some frame of reference. That's why people associate with things to which they are familiar with scent-wise. Of course the tastes of such things usually are nowhere near what we imagine them to be like. I'm sure lemon pledge tastes nothing like lemon and grassy notes are probably not like what it would taste eating real grass.
But our scent is still connected to a conjured up idea of the associated taste. So when we say oak, leather, earth, grass, whatever it's just a descriptor that matches scents we are familiar with to a taste. Especially since cigar taste is even more nuanced when exhaling some of the smoke out the nose. Still though, some descriptions are indeed funny. I remember when I joined here the no snob policy said something along the lines of, "If you can taste notes of Madagascar Vanilla this place isn't for you!". LOLRev. |

Re: Flavors of What?!?
You have to have a very big imagination to taste some of the things you read in reviews. Just like in wine, these tastes are a product of advertising departments. Manufacturers and blenders do not use them.

Re: Flavors of What?!?
actually, I can never fin any of those things in a cigar, buts cause I seem to usually sense flavors in terms of colors and shapes, for instance I recently described a canela wrapped cigar as yellow and very oval shaped, its just how it appears to me
