Flavors of What?!?
Very short rant here but this is one of the things that really gets to me. I was looking at cigars on a website and one was described as having "Flavors of Oak". Oak? What the hell does oak taste like? Has anyone ever eaten or smoked oak? What are the most rediculous claims you've seen in the description of a cigar?

Re: Flavors of What?!?
A lot of the flavors you see described are associated with smell. Things like earthy and hay are often used to describe cigars but I don't know anyone that eats either, it just reminds them of the aroma.
I remember reading one on a flavor wheel that was "wet horse hair" or "horse meat" or something like that.

LOL!!! Funny thread... Cigar profiles need to be articulated to appeal to various smokers, but I have read some funny ones... I was reading a cigar review and they stated that the smoke carried notes of patchouli, marshmellow, and ylang ylang!?! WTF!?! Now some common descriptions such as coffee, dark chocolate, leather, and cedar are easily picked up and can be dead on accurate, but I have never tasted some of the bizarre complexities that others have claimed! For example to me (may not apply to others) the RyJ 1875 has notes/flavors of leather & cedar... While I have never eaten oak, leather, or cedar as of yet, in some cigars, it tastes like it smells, or even carries the scent from the second hand smoke... None the less, I do enjoy reading some of the more comical descriptions in catalogs or especially in reviews. Another favorite of mine is "earthy"... |

Re: Flavors of What?!?
Earthy is a common descriptor and is easy to identify. Have you ever turned damp leaves or shoveled rich, dark, damp dirt? If so that smell is what I taste when I describe a cigar as earthy.

(Not trying to be a kissass) I find myself mostly describing flavors using: grassy, woodsy, cedary, leathery, spicy, coffee, and chocolatey as well.. You gotta hunt for 'em, sometimes, but they're in there, I promise.. Either that or I'm tricking myself! ![]() |

Re: Flavors of What?!?
I have detected Oak based on the description mentioned, but some of these I don't think I'd want to taste...

Re: Flavors of What?!?
You mean to tell me Dave that you don't like cigars that taste horsey with hints of feline musk and rotting wood?

Re: Flavors of What?!?
Everyone's taste buds are different. If a review sounds interesting try it but dont always expect to taste the exact same flavors of the next guy.
That flavor wheel is too complex for me to worry about while I am smoking. Its more of do I like it or I dont.

...and just how do they get these "flavors" for cigars, anyway?

Re: Flavors of What?!?
I'm in line with most others here - earthy, grassy, woodsy, toasted nuts, cedar, oak, vanilla, chocolate.... I've tasted all of those before. Not sure I'd recognize patchouli even if it was there!
The most unusual taste I've found in a cigar??? MEAT!!! In the RP Winter 2008! I did NOT like it at all. ![]()

Re: Flavors of What?!?
Not a big fan of Scotch? (Oak Flavor). The flavor wheel while maybe a bit overboard would be helpful at times when there is a taste that is out there but you can't quite put your mind around.
