Spanish Cedar vs. Others

Puffsters,

I just got a new humidor for a very low price. Call me paranoid, but I am skeptical that the wood many not be spanish cedar. Are there any ways to tell if the inside was at least lined with spanish cedar?

I have heard that if the inside is (for some reason) not actual spanish cedar that during the aging process the cigars will take on more of a wood taste. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Let me guess, ebay? If so, there is a good chance it isnt made of spanish cedar. There is a seller notorious for selling crappy, non spanish cedar lined, really cheap humi's on ebay.

Yea, it was e-bay. The people had a 98% positive user rating...not that they couldn't still be selling crappy humidors though.

Is there any way that I can identify if it is made with spanish cedar at this point?

What he said. Wiki spanish cedar and you will be able to find the differences. Worst case scenario is that it isnt spanish cedar and it isnt cedar at all. Google spanish cedar pics and you can tell.

If it's not Spanish cedar, worst case scenario is it's actual cedar and best case scenario is it's some kind of mahogany. Cheap mahogany-lined humidors aren't going to damage your cigars, they'll just be less aromatic. Functionally they work fine. If the seller didn't specify Spanish cedar, it's likely mahogany-lined. Good news is, in this hobby you won't be using that humidor for long anyway
