Andy, I've been having some trouble with removing bands too lately and have found that the heat of a lit cigar may or may not help. Depends on the cigar for me. I usually keep my band on until the burn gets close and then I'll try to slip it off without damaging the wrapper or I'll try to pull the sealed seam apart.

I've only experienced limited over-glue problems, but it seems to me that the bands are getting bigger and bigger and that multiple bands are becoming more popular. I wonder if the banders are just being rushed too much.
