Re: Mold and plume

When you said your choice of wording may not be the best...I figured you'd be swearing a lot because there was mold on your VSG! I know I would be too.

I think the video helps out a lot since sometimes it is difficult to see in pictures. It also shows that the mold is very prominant(sp?) and sticks out. I've never had a problem with mold, and I'm too impatient to age the cigars long enough for them to grow plume, but thanks for the video Bill! I'm sure this will help everyone out a great deal.

Never dealt with any mold. Can the stick be saved? If so best way?

Re: Mold and plume

Plume is a good thing. It is a reaction between humid air and the oils on a cigar. After age if humidity and temp are correct you should start to see plume or bloom on your cigars.

You can just brush or wipe the mold off in most cases. You also want to check the foot of the cigar to see if the mold has entered it. If so then clip 1/4 - 1/2 inch off and if no mold you can safely smoke. If there is mold that deep keep clipping a little bit at a time until there is no more mold.

Re: Mold and plume

Wipe it off before you smoke it. It can't hurt you but I always wipe it off with a paper towel.

Yes you just smoke it with the plume on it. Keep in mind that it usually takes a loooong time to develop plume.

Re: Mold and plume

Its not hard to tell the differences. Like I used to always say, the mold on cigars looks like molt you would see anywhere. Mold is mold, that's all you have to remember.

Funny. I have a Diamond Crown Maximus I was gifted that had Plume on it when I got it. It had a lot too. I read about it and wiped it off and had it sitting separate from the humidor. Haven't dared smoke it though.

I have a couple NC cigars that have been in my humi for about 7 or 8 years. No plume yet.

Last spring, I took a trip to NY and went to C.A.'s Cigar Inn shop in Manhattan. They had some Ashton VSG cigars with plume. I only bought one, but it was very tasty!
