Very Disappointed With a RP Sun Grown?

Hey everyone, I need some opinions. Tonight I smoked a Rocky Patel torpedo Sun Grown that I've had in the humidor for about 4-5 months. Now I used to love these cigars when I first started out smoking, but tonight this one tasted terrible. Had a really bad chemical taste to it. Almost metallic tasting. I tried smoking through it and got down to the band when I decieded it wasn't going to change flavor profiles and put it down.

Now I have read that RP's are better newer rather than with some age. However I don't necessarily think I aged it that long to take an effect. I could be wrong? Could it be my palate has developed a little and I'm not enjoying all the cigars I did when I started? Maybe it was a bad stick?

I'm a little upset because I was thinking about buying a box of these because I do usually like Rocky Patel's, however if this is how the taste after aging for a while I think it'd be better to buy a fiver at a time and smoke them quickly.

So what do you guys think? Has anyone else experienced this flavor? The other cigars from this humidor taste fine, so I don't think it has anything to do with how I'm storing them. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: Very Disappointed With a RP Sun Grown?

I purchased my first RP Sungrown (as a 5'er) in the Robusto size last spring and the first two I smoked within a month were a bit charred and bitter tasting. I waited another month or so before I smoked another one, and it was much better. Now I have two left and I am anxious to see how they have settled. Maybe I will smoke one this weekend and see how they're doing.
One thing for sure, these are some of Rocky's fullest and strongest smokes I have tried.

Apparently a BAD one. It happens with all of them....then again I've never had a bad Padron 64 or 1926.

Everytime I have a strange tasting stick I recall a cartoon my Uncles had in their SHELL station way back when I was a kid in the 1950's. Had a shot of a mongrel PISSIN' on a tobacco plant. The cartoon read; Are your cigarettes tasting DIFFERENT these days???

Who knows? Does RP have any dogs??

I've smoked about half a dozen or so of these and just don't care for them. I've never had a "metallic" taste from them though. I've settled on the OWRM, The Edge Maduro and the Renaissance from RP. The remainder, I will leave for the rest of you guys.

Re: Very Disappointed With a RP Sun Grown?

I first tried the RP lig b X outs (Sungrown second) and really liked them so I bought a bunch of firsts when they turned up on Joe's Jambalaya. I tried one after a weeks rest. Didn't care for it. Decided to let them set for awhile and see if they improve. My RP fav's - Edge Maduro, Vintage 1990, Old World Reserve Maduro, Indian Tabac Super Fuente.

I had a rp sun grown in my humi for roughly 3 months and just smoked it last week I believe and enjoyed it. I'd say just a bad stick.

Seems to be pretty hit or miss on this line. Thanks for all the opinions, I'll probably pick up 2-3 more of these and see if it was a bad stick or just a change in taste. I just won a box of 1992's so hopefully they don't disappoint.

I've never had a bad 1990 or 92. They are very smooth. Enjoy!

Re: Very Disappointed With a RP Sun Grown?

The Sun Grown is one of the few RP's that I find consistant. Its funny to see the differences in opinions when it comes to tastes. I prefer the Robusto and Toro size. I have also tried the 60 ring guage. Try out a few more, if you still don't like them than I would move on to something else...maybe your flavor profile evolved to enjoy others

Re: Very Disappointed With a RP Sun Grown?

I too read where these die with age. I took that as truth and left mine alone for a long time. Pulled out a 3 year old torpedo the other day and was very pleasantly surprised. I much preferred it to the AF chateau sungrown I had the same day. YMMV.

Re: Very Disappointed With a RP Sun Grown?

I bought 20 thru Joe Cigar daily deal. Some have been magnificent, others are mundane. The draw and burn are great on all, just not the taste. Probably the biggest variance in a single vitola I've seen. The good ones keep me coming back, but I won't ever pay retail prices.
