Re: Most Outrageous B&M Prices
I went to a B&M in Orange County, CA that was recommended to me by a couple of people on this board. The place was very nice, but their prices were over the top. Example: A La Aurora Sapphire figurado that sells for $12.49 at one local B&M and $10 at another was $24.99 at this place. Almost everything this guy had was around twice what I am used to paying. I did buy a Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real tubo for $8.99, one of the cheaper sticks he had. I checked at a local B&M after I got back - $5.75 for the same stick. I don't know the tobacco taxes in CA, they may have played a role.
I like to support local B&Ms, but there are limits. |

Re: Most Outrageous B&M Prices
Here in Montana B&M's are few and far between. Then again so are our larger towns. Prices are SO INSANE that it's tough to rationalize wasting the money. A stick I can buy for $4 online is $8-$9+ at most of them. And for that 100% markup I can't even smoke the damned thing in their shop!!! I refuse to finance anything that offers me nothing in return.
When I visit my Mom in Jersey theres a great little B&M in Barnegat that has decent prices, a VERY friendly athmosphere as well as a comfortable place to smoke. I'd kill for something like that here at home...especially when my garage is well below freezing during our six months of winter. FN in MT |

Re: Most Outrageous B&M Prices
This is an amusing thread. Try this if you are concerned that online sales will eventually drive the B&M's out of business: where you see the word online, substitute "mailorder". Remember that?? 1-800 JR Cigar?? Remember when you filled out the order form and enclosed a check or money order---DON'T SEND CASH!!!--- and licked a stamp???
My point is that mailorder/online cigars have been available for decades. And I don't know about your area, but here where I live there are way more B&M's now than there were 20 years ago. Back in the day they were news stands and they had a humidor with cigars. In big cities you had stores devoted solely to tobacco products. Now they are all over the place. If they fail it is because of poor business practices; not understanding the product or market, paying too high rent for the amount of traffic, any number of ways to go out of business. It is not because people buy online,,,,ooops, I mean Mailorder! If the prices are too high, well, take an hour and do some price comparisons. Are all your local shops about the same price on the same cigar?? Pretty close?? There is probably a good reason for that. I'm in the restaurant business and you can be sure that we check the competitors' prices from time to time, and we discreetly ask around so we know where we stand. Ya gotta do your homework! If one shop is way over priced they will likely be gone soon so don't worry. Or maybe they have snobby or foolish customers who don't know better. Maybe they offer something that the other shops don't to enhance their appeal. Perhaps they have wholesale accounts and don't rely only on walk-in sales. Who knows and who cares?? Pick a tobacconist you like and stick with him/her. Or shop online. Now you can do that guilt free!! |

I only go to my local B&M for there 50% off bin. It is stuff that is not selling and I can get it for a little less. It also gives me a chance to try something different. I can not believe it is all taxes but I do wonder, all three cigar shops are the same price on the same cigars. However, the price seems high. MSRP on a box I was looking for was 98$, I can get them for 45$ online, All the local B&M shops were 124$ a box. I have a hard time believing that the taxes and markup on a box of cigars is equal to twice MSRP and assuming that 45$ is wholesale that is a HUGE Markup! I frequent my local B&M to buy singles to try, If I like them Ill check the box price there but 10 times out of 10 I end up ordering online. |

Re: Most Outrageous B&M Prices
Let me know how the next cigar party, cigar dinner, or cigar personality meet-n-greet goes for you on Cbid. Did you get your box of Tatuaje's autographed by Pete Johnson and grab your free Tat Blacks with the purchase when Pete was a guest on Cbid?
The same people who bitch about B&M prices are the same people who have no qualms about spending $8 a shot for Tequila at the bar, while the whole bottle is only $15.99 at the Piggly Wiggly. And don't even get me started on the people who are happy to pay $4.00 for coffee at Starbucks every morning on their way to work (That's $80.00 a month in case you're keeping score). |

How can you possibly make a statement like that? Somehow you know how much people are spending on coffee and tequila???? Perhaps you took a survey? A questionaire for the whiners? If you value Pete Johnson's signiture, be my guest, go get one. Just speaking for myself, I'm a cigar smoker, not a groupie, but to each his own. Thanks for the laugh, I needed it! |

It is usual to find Opus X between $25-35 per stick. In Las Vegas - $100!

Re: Most Outrageous B&M Prices
The difference between buying an overpriced cigar at a B&M and buying an alcoholic drink at a bar is that most of that extra cost comes from taxes. I'd rather support my local bar than give tons more tax money to the gov't (as if i dont already give them enough).
