Humidity Question

Hello all,

I am sure this is posted somewhere else but I cannot seem to find it. I have a 300 ct humidor coming in the mail and I wanted to buy humidity beads so I wouldn't have to worry about my humidity inside the humidor as much. Here is a link to what I bought: Humidor Humidity Beads 70% Rh Large Round Case from Heartfelt Industries

Should've I bought the 65% instead? What do you keep your humidity at? I am going to have my humidor in my basement, which is nice and cool down there, almost constant temperature all year around.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Joe

Re: Humidity Question

The 70% will be fine, although I'd have gone with the 65% myself.

Re: Humidity Question

All my cigars are kept in my basement and all my humidors stay right around 72%.

Re: Humidity Question

If you want the humidity more or less, I would suggest just less beads maybe. Not sure if they are meant to work like that though.

I just bought a 250 count humi myself. I'm getting a 1/2 pound of the 64% beads, 2 mesh baggies, and 1 squirt bottle. Will be putting them in the floral foam humidifier holder on the lid. Should work good.

Thanks for your responses. I believe I will just keep the 70 then.

Re: Humidity Question

Actually, one other question. Should I keep the wrappers on my cigars or take them off in my humi?

That is personal preferance. The cello will help protect the cigars against handling. They will not affect the humidity since the cello is permeable. I usually just store it the way it came.

Re: Humidity Question

I'm sorta partial to removing the wrappers when I put cigars in the humidor... I don't know why I just always have, I think it makes them age a little better, without man made materials on them. As long as you're not manhandling the cigars or shaking the humidor, how much protection can they really need in there?

Just do a search for wrappers, you will find tons of discussions on this. I think you'll be fine with the 70%.

Re: Humidity Question

I got my beads today. They don't seem to be working at 70%, do I need to wet them lightly with distilled water?

Spray with distilled water until about 70 - 80 percent of them are clear. The clear ones will give off moisture while the others will soak up moisture.

Ok, I did that and about 75% turned clear almost instantly. I checked my hygro 4 hours late and it still hasn't moved much. Maybe I will have better news in the morning If I don't, do you think I could possibly have a leak in my humi?
