Connecticut River Valley crop loss

My good friend from lodge is a Connecticut River Valley Tobacco farmer (family legacy). His family owns the Smiarowski farm in Sunderland and sells their wrappers to Romeo y Julieta (among others).

Those of you in the New England area remember just how much rain we had this Spring and the first half of Summer. Think: Downpour everyday, all day for two and a half months. Chuck has been telling me just how hard it has been on the crop this year and turns out most all of the crop is a total lost. Problem is, every other farm in the valley is in the same spot. Looks like maybe 75% or more of the entire years crop is lost.

I cannot yet post links, but you can find a nice podcast from one of the farmers by googling: "mass. tobacco farmers weather the worst crop" it should be the first return from wbur.

Being that I smoke almost exclusively Conn Shade, I'm pretty worried about this.

Those of you with more experience than I, what will this do to the price and availability of Conn Cigars?

Here the link

wbur.org » News » Mass. Tobacco Farmers Weather The Worst Crop Of Their Lifetimes

I read this story yesterday, totally sucks for them. Not only for the farmers but as the article lines out the local economy as well. Some will at least get covered by the insurance but that will come back on them next year with higher premiums as well...
