A Man's Greatest Fear: loss of taste!

What is the single worst thing you can imagine happening?
I have had to take the week off of cigars.
On monday afternoon I lit up one of my oldest cigars from my humidor; a Gurkha Legend Perfecto. I can't remember exactly when I got it but I think I got a couple of them one Christmas about 3 or so years ago. Anyway, I lit this thing up and it burned my mouth with the worst chemical taste I have ever experienced. It was like poison! The smoke was acrid as was the taste on my lips.
So I tossed the thing, and instead lit up an Aurora 1495 to cleanse the palate. It wasn't a bad smoke, but it lacked personality. Disappointing.
So hours later, after dinner, I'm thinking about how I want to vindicate the day, so I take ole' reliable-- a Padilla 1932 to the porch for some real cigar smoking and....
nothing! no flavor!, no complexity! Everything that I had become so accustomed to with the 1932 gone!
I got scared that I maybe I had lost my taste buds.
Now like many, I suffer from seasonal allergies and that is sometimes known to affect taste too and I did have some of those symptoms, so I tried not to worry about that damn poison cigar and instead just chalk it up to a bum nose. I haven't smoked a cigar since, well till tonight.
I took a DPG Cuban Classic to the porch after dinner tonight, and after gently toasting the foot, I brought the cigar to my lips...
It was awesome! Thank the Lord I can smoke again! hahaha!
I don't know if it was allergies or a nasty gar, but I'M Back!

Re: A Man's Greatest Fear: loss of taste!

There can be a lot of variables that will stifle the taste buds,,,,allergies, taking anti biotics or other medications. If you have any kind of sinusitus or sinus infection it can last for a good week or better and still mess with your taste buds. When I have this condition I just stop smoking cigars period because it's all about taste for me. Usually, when your food tastes right then you can predict that your stogies will come back as well.

I've lost my taste buds for 2+ weeks.

DAMN HOT TAMALES.

Not kidding either. Spicy cinnamon will burn off your taste buds. Need to wait up to a month for things to taste right again. Took me between 2-3 weeks and my tongue felt weird and things didn't taste. I also had Buffalo Chicken tenders earlier that night, spicy overload.

My guess would be medications, a food reaction, or a cold stating up. It happens to just about every smoker out there, it'll be OK.

If you have to smoke right now, time to dig out those "not so great" cigars..... Since you can't taste 'em anyways.
