Something along the lines of Cohiba...

Hey Folks, I thought I'd post this question here mostly for a buddy of mine. Cohibas have quickly become one of his favorite cigars, unfortunately they start around $13 a stick at the local B&M. The boxes aren't exactly cheap either, so I told him he ought to look around for some other go-to smokes that have Cohiba-esk qualities. So, what would you all suggest a Cohiba fan try when looking for an alternative every day smoke?

Thanks!

I assume you are talking about Non-Cuban Cohibas?

Re: Something along the lines of Cohiba...

There are PLENTY of cigars that are far better than a Dominican Cohiba!

For a high-quality, medium-bodied cigar, go with some of Pepin's cigars, or even a Davidoff.

Re: Something along the lines of Cohiba...

Yes, these are the Dominican Cohibas. I've only had two of them personally and found the first one just OK, but the second was pretty good. But my buddy is really into them, so I thought I'd see what folks suggest as something similar.

Most of the Davidoffs I've seen are pretty spendy also, I'll mention those and Pepin to him. Any other suggestions?

Re: Something along the lines of Cohiba...

There are lots of excellent Cameroon smokes much better and much cheaper than red dots. Dominican Cohiba is, IMHO, one of the biggest scheists in the industry.

Carlos Torano 1916, Cusano Cameroon Cabinet (?), Oliva Serie G, H. Upmann Vintage Cameroon...

Re: Something along the lines of Cohiba...

Several that might work:
La Gloria Cubana Serie R maduro
Rocky Patel Sun Grown
Rocky Patel Edge maduro
Don Pepin Garcia blue label
Don Pepin Garcia Cuban Classic
CAO Brazilia
CAO Italia
CAO Mx2
Partagas black
Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real
Montecristo
Carlos Torano Exodus 1959 (gold label)

Just to name a few. I don't buy Dominican Cohibas just because they ripped off a name they played no role in building.

Arturo Fuente Hemmingway! Less than a cohiba and much more delicious!

Re: Something along the lines of Cohiba...

I've picked up a few various Red Dots in combos. I don't hate them, but they just don't do anything for me, either, especially not at a serious premium in price. I keep looking at the Toro-mania and Corona-mania bundles in the last JR catalog, and the Cohibas are the main reason I haven't bought either one yet. I guess I could put them up in the trade/sell forum, but I'd really rather have five extra of the LGC's instead and not even have to deal with it.

They're not horrible, or anything, there's just so many other things I like a lot better. I would happily trade the few I have left 1-for-1 for any AF Hemingways, regardless of size or price.

Re: Something along the lines of Cohiba...

Just make sure that you never smoke a Cohiba XV. By far it is the worst cigar I have ever smoked!
