Broken A/C = Frozen Cigars and a soon to be lecture from G/F.
Well, just like the title says. My A/C broke. I came home from work around 7:30 PM tonight to an 82 degree apartment. At first I thought my girlfriend got cold and shut the air conditioner off and forgot to turn it back on before she went to work. No. That was not the case. It was running, but no cold air was blowing out. It didn't make sense to me.
The first thing I thought of was all my cigars! Luckily they were only at 73 degrees at that point. The cooler holds temps very well! Anyway, by the time I got done messing with stuff, the temperature in the cooler got to 75 degrees. At this point I was freaking out, mostly because I was hot as hell, and I knew I had to take care of my stogies as soon as possible. As you are reading this, they are taking a nice cold nap in the fridge for safe keeping. At this point, I don't know what makes me mad. The broken A/C. The fact that the emergency maintenance # for my apartment complex has been disconnected. Or the future lecture I'll get from my girlfriend for 'having too many cigars.' That is...only if she opens the fridge from now, until whenever we can get the A/C looked at. The point of this post is hopefully everyone can wish me luck. And give me some advice as to what I should do or tell my girlfriend if she asks about all my cigars? I could say what Cigary said on another post to his wife. "How did all those get in there?" Anyway, I kept a few out and put in my travel humi. So I can last the weekend. Wish me luck and hope everyone elses weekend seems better than mine! |

75 degrees isn't THAT bad. But it is getting warm in my apartment. I figured it probably wont be until Monday until someone comes by to check out the A/C unit outside. It's been in the low 100's here this past week, so I'm sure its going to get pretty steamy inside my apartment without any air conditioning. I'm just taking some precautions before it does get hotter. In fact. I just looked again inside my cooler. It is now 81 degrees in my cooler. And 85 degrees in my apartment!

Re: Broken A/C = Frozen Cigars and a soon to be lecture from G/F.
Having your A/C go out sucks esp. in the summertime. Knowing you are in Kansas it can be brutal in the summer and you might want to get one of those big RubberMaids to put your gars in,,,,then put your humidifier inside of that. If you have a cooler put the RubberMaid inside your cooler with some ice in a big freezer bag so you wont get any leaks,,,but it will keep your cigars cooled down until you get your A/C fixed. Yes, everytime my wife sees me getting more cigars from C Bid or other sources I just tell her,,,"WTH is this about,,,cigars in the mail like this?" She just shakes her head and I act like I have no clue how more cigars appear in my humidors or why they come to me in the mail.

Good luck... Hope she's understanding. Just tell her they're in the fridge because you're "protecting your investment"! LOL

We lost power for nine days for Hurricane Gustav and
me and my cigars were just fine. After Katrina, I had coolers that sat in my ruined house for a month before they could be retreived. They were one of the few things that suffered little damage. |

I was under the impression that 75 C for a limited time is fine, so long as the cigars are not exposed to temperatures above 80 C for extended periods of time.
But I guess its always better to error on the side of caution. |

Re: Broken A/C = Frozen Cigars and a soon to be lecture from G/F.
Ben everything will be just fine. My whole collection made 12 days last year with no AC and no fridge during "Ike". I left them in the Vino and coolers and they all survived just fine. The beads kept the humidity steady but the temps were above 80 the whole time...

Re: Broken A/C = Frozen Cigars and a soon to be lecture from G/F.
Damn. Same thing happened to me earlier this summer. The heatpump siezed and just blew ambient air. Suddenly, I knew why I had two rules:
1) Always keep a window unit as a back-up. 2) Always keep several blue ice packs in the freezer at the ready. I have four humis and dry box. I lay a towel on top of the humis, the blue ice on top of that and a doubled towel over the blue ice. At 85f in the house, the humis all stayed at a cozy 68. If you use beads, you have no worries about condensation, so I'd feel fine about tossing a pack or two in the coolidor. It wont take much to knock things back down to around 70. Get those sticks out of that fridge. There is nothing protecting against condensation in there and if the GF finds them... ![]()
