Converting a closet to a walk-in
I have a small unused closet in the hallway near the center of my house and the other day I got the idea that this would make a great walk-in humidor. Has anyone here ever done this?

Never seen it done outside of tobacco shops, but assuming you have the cash for it (I'd imagine it would be nice to put cedar shelves and drawers in, along with a glass door panel and a really good large-scale humidifier), it would be cool to see.

I have never heard of anyone personally doing it other than in a cigar shop. It would be cool to see how it turns out though. Probably very expensive with all of the cedar.

Good luck with your project.
Unless money really isn't an issue, I'd spend the money on cigars and stack coolers in the closet. It also isn't gonna add any value to your house, unless you're lucky enough to sell it to a cigar smoker who wants his own walk in. ![]() |

+1 on this idea. For the money to renovate a walk-in you could probably get tons of stuff and ten throw coolers in the closet.

I would thing that you would have to rip out the old drywall and and put some sort of vapour barrier with mold resistant drywall as your base, then line with spanish cedar. Could be good.

Re: Converting a closet to a walk-in
It can actually add value to the house if done properly for:
a. Anyone who smokes cigars b. Anyone who collects wines c. Anyone who has fur coats and a few others I'm sure. The closet will need to be torn down, a vapor barrier put up and then rewalled with greenboard (the drywall used in bathrooms to prevent mold issues). You won't really need cedar walls, but shelves would be advised. The door will need a tight seal. I would also recommend getting a digital hygro with a remote sensor so you can put the hygro on the outside wall (so you can check on it without opening the door). I have a link somewhere for a 4 piece unit (1 hardwired hygro and 3 remote sensors).. I'll see if I can find it. The floor should be wood or tile floor. If you can run a water line, that would be best to connect it to a direct line humidifier (the humidifier would also connect to your main hygro panel which will also allow you to set when it should turn on and off). |

Re: Converting a closet to a walk-in
Also, not every cigar smoker's significant other would tolerate such a room. A walk in closet, definitely a value add. I've never heard a lady complain about too much extra closet space. Walk in humidor, I'm guessing 99.99% of the time, NOT a value add for resale.

Re: Converting a closet to a walk-in
The resale value really isn't a factor in this case. The house is paid for and I intend to stay here until I "assume room temperature". I would have some sort of temperature control device in it as well as humidification, so even if the next owner doesn't smoke cigars, they could easily convert it for wine storage just by changing the shelving.

Re: Converting a closet to a walk-in
I would do it in a heart beat! I would not tear down the walls there or use cedar on the walls. I would primer the walls with a Killz product then use enamel paint over it. For the floor I would pull out the carpet (if thats what you have) and stain the concert. Both of these should save money and work just fine. Now you need a plug on the inside of the closet (or you should really do this first LOL) and make sure the door has a good seal and your ready to go.
Just add shelves and a humidifier and you are set. I have talked to some B&M owners and another guy who made a room into a humidor and they all agreed that this would work. Now I just need a closet I can use LOL.
