Really noob question

Hey all,

I smoked first cigar yesterday, long time cigarette smoker, a friend gave me a cigar at a party but did not tell me anything on how to smoke them, not sure what kind of or brand,

anyway I cut but then realized about 1/4 way through I lit it at the wrong end.

Like I said I did a really stupid thing by lighting it at the wrong end, I had a few drinks in me already and just did not realize what I was doing.

By the time I got it 1/4 in it started to unravel and basically I could not use it any more.

So I have two questions:

By smoking the wrong end was I smoking tobacco? or is it like a cigarette? where they put a filter on the other end? it tasted pretty good to me so whatever I was smoking tasted good.

Second question since this is a new world for me I would like to try my own cigars would would recommend I look to try on my own as a beginner? what brands?

I live in NYC and I know there are plenty of tobacco shops around but not sure what is available.

Thanks

Re: Really noob question

Yes you were smoking tobacco. There is no filter on hand rolled cigars. If you smoke from the correct end you can still get unraveling if you cut too much of the cap off. When a cigar is made the last step is to apply the "cap" this is a small piece of tobacco that is applied to the end (the closed part). The cap is what holds the whole thing together.

Welcome to the wonderful world of cigars. Below is a link to a good starter list of cigars for noobs and experienced smokers alike.

Re: Really noob question

A cigar has a Head (the end you cut and goes in your mouth), and it has a Foot (the end you light). A good cigar is all tobacco, end to end.

Tobacco leaves are stronger nearest the stem and milder furthest away from the stem.

The way a cigar is rolled is to have the filler of the cigar with the tobacco nearest the stem, the stronger tasting tobacco, in the Head end. This allows the cigar to progressively grow stronger and more complex as it is smoked.

Lighting it at the wrong end really shouldn't make it unsmokable, just throw off the taste somewhat. Unraveling might possibly be another problem, I don't know.

Being a cigarette smoker (as well as cigars and pipes), I would recommend cigars with "med", "med/full", and "full" in the description. With you having only the one cigar, not knowing what it was or if you liked it or not, it's difficult to make a choice for you. I would read through the fourm and see what others in your situation have enjoyed.

Also, Welcome to Puff!

Re: Really noob question

I would be willing to bet that there are many experienced cigar smokers that have lit the wrong end before.

Re: Really noob question

I have a couple of perfectos that are capped on both ends. If I slip the bands off and then don't light them for a while, I really have to stare at them to figure out which end is which.

Re: Really noob question

Drinking + smoking = a good time

Drunk + smoking = "iffy" at best.... I've even lit the wrong end of a cigarette many times.

Re: Really noob question

So here is an update:

I went to my local store to take a look around, problem is, where I live right now it is raining every single night, it seems like that the entire summer in NY

So I told the sales guy I wanted to try one that would only take maybe 10 minutes to smoke

He recommended Henri Winterman Cafe Creme Arome, came in a tin of 20 for $9 total

Well when I first opened it it smelled really nice but it does not taste anything like the tin smells like LOL

It tastes pretty good and does create a lot of smoke, but I have a problem, and I bet a lot of others have the same problem who use to smoke cigarettes how do you forgot not to inhale by mistake?

It is a habit that I do not realize is sort of second nature and i did it a few times oh man that was horrible...

Oh i also saw the first cigar I smoked it was called Mancanudo Hyde Park, I rcognized the packaging while I was there.
