Keep in mind this was in the mid 90's during the peak of the cigar boom, so his one cigar a week wasnt even a drop in the bucket. So the first 3 or so times I would just tell him to go pick out another as that was the general managers policy at the time, when in doubt replace the cigar. I think this policy was great becasue we would get guys in buying a bunch of singles and during the basic small talk it would come out that the last xxxx I smoked was plugged and I had to throw it out and when we replaced their cigar you would think that you just handed them a million bucks! I made a mention to the manager concerning this individual because he was always so damn smug and arrogant about the whole thing. Like he was getting one over on us in the cigar shop. So I got the go ahead to cut him off next time he came in with a nub of a cigar. He came in with his usual MO that the cigar was plugged and he wasnt happy about spending his money on a cigar that is plugged etc etc. So I asked him if it was plugged how did he manage to smoke it down to the nub and he looks me dead in the eye and tells me that it burnt that far down in the ashtray. I explained to him that there is no way that his toro burnt down to a 1 1/2 inch nub in the ashtray and that the managers policy was that if the cigar is UNSMOKEABLE due to construction we replace the cigar no questions asked. We however are all cigar smokers and not all that naive and gulliable when it comes to cigars and the miracle of a 6 inch plugged cigar burning down to a nub. He proceeded to threaten me with a defamation lawsuit for calling him a liar and he is a lawyer with a firm that will own the store if we dont replace his cigar. So when he was finished I asked him in my smugest most arrogant voice if he was really going to sue for defamation and "own this store" over a $3.00 crappy mexican cigar. I never got a reply as he turned around and left the store and I never saw him come back in!
I've been going to the same B&M for over 20 years getting cigars from the present owners dad before I was legal age. I've never taken back a cigar because of construction defects, always just figured it kinda went along with the"best cigar could be in the same box as the worst cigar." that being said on more than one occasion the staff has noticed me smoking in the lounge with a bad pick and invited me to get another.

I would like to add that it is probably not the B&M's fault. I would say most of the time the fault would be the manufacturer's. Of course there are those occassions when a cigar has been improperly stored & the draw has been affected because of it (the draw could be a little tight because of how humid it is kept), but I've never had it be so humid that it was unsmokeable. Has anybody had a B&M cigar be so humid that it couldn't be smoked?

Yeah I always thought getting a plugged one was a risk that goes with enjoying a cigar that is rolled by hand and has that possibility of human error, but the general manager wanted customer service to go above the small profit loss for a few cigars that were replaced. Most customers didnt expect another cigar but I think the little perk kept many customers coming back.

I havent had anything that bad from a B&M. That being said if I am in a humidor that is overly dry or humid I don't usually buy there no matter how great the prices.

We smoked everything right out of the humidor and didn't have any problem for the most part. Sure there was the occasional plugged or hot burner that was a little light on the filler but that was so few and far in between that it wasn't noticeable. For the most part we were fortunate to get quality products from the vendor/manufacturer. Everything that came in from UPS or FEDEX was rotated to the back of the stack so for the most part the cigars had had time to settle into their new environment prior to being broken open for singles or sold as a box.

Re: Crazy bad behaviour in a cigar shop!!

Wow, there are some really crazy stories here. I have seen a lot of the same things as well. Here are a few.

1) Guys who take the cello off and sniff cigars (this happens in EVERY shop)

2) I hate the guys who only show up when we get an Opus shipment. Then we never see them for 3 months until the next shipment comes in. And, yes, they send in their friends to buy more Opus for them (we limit 4 sticks per visit).

3) Guys who complain about price. "This cigar is $4.00 here and I can get them at _ _ _ _ _ _ down the road for $3.85."

4) "What's on sale today?" I hate that. I'm not friggin Wal Mart.

5) "How come you don't carry JR Alternatives?"

6) "Thompson's has this great brand I get all the time...."

7) "I only usually smoke Cubans. I've got a buddy in Miami who gets them for me."

A guy came in a few weeks ago and actually asked for Opus Chile Peppers!! Then he looked surprised that I didn't have any.

None of them top this: Several years ago I was sitting around with my Father in law at the shop. A guy comes in and strikes up a conversation about cigars. Then he looks at the 5 or 6 burnt nubs in the ashtray and says, "Do you mind if I grab those?" I was a bit taken aback, but said no. He grabs the burnt butts out of the ashtray, puts them in a small tin box he had with him, says thanks and turns around and leaves.

I read somewhere that Winston Churchill's gardener used to take Sir Winston's cigar butts, break them up and smoke them in his pipe ... ?

Cigar Man Andy told me that a little trick is to soak used cigar butts in water for a while, and then use the water to spray down your lawn - this gets rid of bugs, but leaves plants just fine.

I might try that -- I have a couple summers' worth of butts that I tossed in our unused fire pit in the yard.

My ganddaddy used to go outside to chew, and he would spit on the leaves of grandmama's rose bushes. He told me it would keep the aphids from eating the plants without spraying poison on them. You can also use tobacco juice on insect bites & stings to draw the histamine out and relieve the sting / itch.

When we were kids if we got stung grandpa would take a small pinch of his cigarette tobacco and moisten it in his mouth and place it on the sting. Worked every time!
Of course I always just thought it was because of grandpa's "magic" spit.
