Looking for advice for special treat
Hi All,
Stumbled across this site while doing some research. I'm not a big cigar smoker, but do enjoy the indulgence from time to time. My Father enjoys cigars much more and we are getting together at the end of the month for a Father/Son Alaskan inner passage cruise. A lifelong dream trip, that just so happens to coincide with his birthday. My question is in regards to doing something really special for him. I've bought him a few gifts, but we have often spoken of sitting out on our cabin balcony the first night and enjoying a cigar to celebrate the occasion. I don't really know that much about cigars, but I'm willing to shell out some bucks on a couple of smokes for us that night and am looking for recommendations. He is a big fan of A. Fuente Hemingways (his standard smoke), and I was thinking about picking up some Opus X (standard or forbidden), but the more I've read the more I've come to determine that these are not the cigars you want to break the wrapper on and smoke. These should be left to sit in a humidor for an extended period of time. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if that is correct it won't help me. So, please help. What can I buy online (I live in Vegas and don't want to get the standard raping that goes with this kind of thing here) that would blow his mind and make this great trip that much more enjoyable. Please advise, and thanks in advance. |

Re: Looking for advice for special treat
Since it is for you and your father I would recommend a cigar that is called "My Father". It is an elegant and refined cigar and is made by one of the best houses in the industry which is Garcia's.
It was blended by Don Pepin Garcias son, Jaime and it was in honor of his father. I think you would both enjoy the experience from the classy band to the delicious, rich smoke.

Re: Looking for advice for special treat
I will 2nd that emotion on the Padron Anniversaries. You might even want to get on Cbid and look for the 40th version of those as well. Butter smooth in the humi or not.

Re: Looking for advice for special treat
Zen, I've smoked Opus X straight out of the cello, and they're still great - not as good as letting them sit, but they'll still blow your mind. I'll also second (third?) the Padron Anniversary recommendation as well. You might also look at Ashton VSG, and AVO cigars in their varying strength profiles.

Re: Looking for advice for special treat
Thanks guys! Although it's not that once in a great blue moon gift price I was shooting for, I really like the sound of those Garcia "My Father" cigars, and I'm sure he will appreciate the thought behind it (so long as they are good as I've been reading). Went over to Cigar.com and put two #3 in my cart. Also because he is such a big fan of the Fuente line and this is a once in a life time ordeal, think I'm also going to splurge and I just put two Opus X Perfection #2 in the cart as well. Why not give them a shot?
I'll keep the Padron Anniversary in my mind for the next time as those sound very nice. While we're at it, before I hit the buy now button, is there a better place to shop, or is Cigar.com a reputable place with decent prices? Thanks again. Something tells me a small humidor and a whole lot more questions are in my near future. |

CIGAR.COM IS OVER PRICED. Generally. If you want I'll help you find some good pricing online for them. Give me a few minutes. |

Re: Looking for advice for special treat
Fuente Opus X Super Belicoso | Famous Smoke Shop
Thats my recommended size for the Opus X. Its got the Torpedo shape which most people are fans of. The XXX and Super Belicoso are best. $12.00 each compared to $34.00 each on cigar.com. They don't seem to carry My Father though, so lemme check for them. EDIT Nevermind the out of stock at the moment. One more moment. ![]() |

Re: Looking for advice for special treat
Bah, this is whats frustrating. Some cigars, Opus X, Anejo, Casa Magna, etc. the companies want them to be sold through B&M stores, which means a physical store not an online retailer. My local shop sells Opus X usually between $12.00 to $18.00 each. Their prices seem the same as famous. Most stores are limited to certain amounts they can purchase, and since websites get high traffic they sell out fast. Local stores keep them in stock longer.
Might want to check with some members if their local shops have any in stock. I can check my local shop if you want, they had some last time I was there. Or if you have a local shop in your area, make a list of some good stuff with the cheapest prices available online and ask anyone there what they have. I'm sure you will only spend $40.00 maybe $50.00 as to $100 to $150 you would on cigar.com. Famous Smoke is generally better priced. Cigars International owns cigar.com and is better priced. JR is pretty good with prices and selection. Holts is good on selection. Thompson and Cigar.com are generally over priced on everything. Good call on that Shawn. Forgot that Taboo offers some other premium cigars. |
