Cigar Store Etiquette

I went to my neighborhood cigar store which is owned by a fellow I used to work with 20 years ago or so - we are still cordial to each other. I couldn’t find a cigar so he picked an H Upmann Special Selection for me saying it was a great smoke. I got a cup of coffee and cut the cigar. I then sat in one of the couches with a few other guys smoking cigars. When I fired my cigar the draw would give you a hernia. I felt the neck and it had a ball in it - I used a long pipe pick one of the guys sitting there having a coffee had with him. I immediately told the owner the cigar he picked for me has a hard smoke and a bad roll.

He and the other guys sitting there watched me messing with the cigar for about five minutes with the pick. One said I’d pitch that one and get another - the owner agreed but it was another $5.80. I went and got the cutters and cut below the obstruction (about 1.75") from where the cap was before I cut it off.

I didn’t know the proper etiquette for a situation like this. Should I have expected the store owner, involved in our BS session, to replace the cigar or was it on me to purchase that one (even though marginally smokable) and purchase another?

I’m new to the cigar store BS and smoking sessions.

Every store is different. Would have been a good gesture of him to give you another though, and I know many shops do that.

I'm not sure if they can or not, but they may be able to get refunded themselves for damaged or defective merchandise from their wholesaler, who may get refunded from the manufacture.

Who knows.

To me this is about Customer service and has nothing to do with it being a Cigar store thing. He should have replaced it! On the same token was it a Larger cigar than you are used to smoking so it might have just taken more of a draw than you're used to.

Re: Cigar Store Etiquette

Well... The owner should have probably just gave you another, escpecially since he saw you fighting the cigar. That's just my 2 cents, & I can tell you that's what my B&M would have done.

The owner of a local B&M told me that it varies by manufacturer. He said that one company (unfortunately I don't recall who) shipped him a box of glass tubos, several of which arrived broken. When he inquired about it with the company, he was essentially told "Well, that happens sometimes." No offer to replace them or anything - and he said they weren't cheap.

As far as the original situation, I believe the owner should have replaced the cigar. On top oif everything else, he picked it out for you and watched you struggle with it (not that he could have known it was a plugged stick, but still). Just as a goodwill business gesture, that would have been the right thing to do.

Re: Cigar Store Etiquette

I would of expected him to replace it...

Just as you would if the soda you go was flat or the meal you ordered came out wrong..

Yes its a man made product of natural ingrediants but its the customer service that matters..

Re: Cigar Store Etiquette

If the store owner is worth a damn, he should have replaced it. Stores can save defective cigars and send them back for a credit or replacement, or wait until they see the rep and let them deal with it.

Re: Cigar Store Etiquette

The consumer always has the right to ensure that goods and services he has ordered are what they are paying for. If I eat out for dinner and my meal is cold or its just a bad meal I will call the manager over and let them know that the meal was not done right in which they will ask if I want another meal ( which I dont because of the obvious ) and I will just tell them to take it off my bill except for beverages or anything else I consumed. It's the same for cigars,,,if I get ahold of a bad one that I have had before and know its profile I will let them know it's bad and they can either replace it or give me my money back. It's not a big deal but a lot of people shy away from doing that because they do not want to confront the other person.

Re: Cigar Store Etiquette

You are paying him for the cigar, not the 5 minutes of aggravation you get dicking around with it. I would have said something.

If the owner saw this happen, he should have replace it without hesitation. I am a business owner and I would put this in the "cost of business" category. I wouldn't want to be known for selling a defective product. It would be responsibility to take it up with the manufacturer/rep/or whoever.

I don't see how you would "expect" it as it is a business like any other and like any other business sometimes customer service sucks

Re: Cigar Store Etiquette

Well - my take on it is this: If you had picked the cigar, I would say it could go either way, I don't know if I'd hold it against a store if they didn't offer to replace the smoke, but it would be good business if they did offer. However, the owner recommended that cigar to you and you purchased it - in this case there is no question that he should have replaced it.

Re: Cigar Store Etiquette

He should have replaced the cigar and apologized for picking a plugged cigar. That is just good buisness.
