ups surcharge

Hello to all:
Just wondering. So far I have given all my cigar orders to J.R. No problems.
But I am starting to think about the shipping charges. If I order from c.i. and take joes deal, then everything in the order will be shipped ups to me, and delivered next day.
What my question I have with jr is, they charge 2.50 cents per item. Plus an extra dollar (fuel charge) on top of that.(Extra dollar is for entire order).
I buy quite a bit of items from various vendors and even though I know there is a possible fuel surcharge, that ups asks for in times of high fuel cost, I have never seen it added on, except for J.R. Its not the dollar, its the point of the matter.
Also, sometimes they throw in something for free, like 10 humidity cards with a deal. They have the nerve to charge 2.50 cents for an ounce worth of stuff. They try and give you things for a penny, which might cost them a buck, but then they make the profit on the 2.50 delivery charge. Doesnt make it quite free, imho.
Anyway, what about the fuel charge? I think C. I. is going to get a lot of orders from me in the future.
\
Much regards Jerry

Re: ups surcharge

My mom owns a ups store and she doesn't charge people "fuel surchage" I think it understood all that is included. I think its a way of recouping some $$. Some people who sell on e-bay and other online retailors something similiar to this. I just bought some cheap Rayban Wafarers knock offs for party of our wedding party entrance and they were 1.09 plus 1.99 per item shipping costs me almost double. When they could easily throw them in a box and ship them for next to nothing. Sadly it was the cheapest was I found.

Some cases its i think its illegal, I know shipping scams are against e-bay policy.

All in all I think its a way to recoup so costs. But it still doesn't make it easy to swallow.

Re: ups surcharge

I work for UPS and to my knowledge we have never charged a fuel surcharge. FedEx imposed this a about a year and a half-two years ago however. If UPS catches wind of this and JR is actually publishing that UPS is charging such a fee, there will be terse words.

Re: ups surcharge

From the JR FAQ regarding shipping charges, I think 1- is the one in question

What are your shipping charges?
DELIVERY CHARGES PER ORDER:

- $2.50 per item (including free goods)
- Priority Mail - item charges - +$6.00
- 2nd Day - item charges - + $6.00
- Next Day - item charges - +$16.00
- Sat. Del.- item charges - +$25.00

Please note:

1- A $1.00 UPS Ground Fuel Surcharge or a $2.00 Air Fuel Surcharge will be incurred on all packages sent by UPS.

2- UPS 2nd Day Air (Blue Label) is delivered on the second "Business Day" after the order ships. Saturday, Sunday and shipper observed holidays are not "Business Days."

3- UPS Next Day Air (Red Label) is delivered on the next "Business Day" after the order ships.

4- All orders must be placed before 2:00 p.m. EST to be shipped the same day Monday through Friday. All orders placed after 2 p.m. on Fridays, on Saturdays and Sundays will be shipped on the following Monday; if Monday is a holiday, the orders will ship on the next business day.

5- UPS Saturday Delivery is only available from Thursday at 2:00 p.m. EST to Friday at 1:59:59 p.m. EST.

6- After three unsuccessful delivery attempts, UPS will return your package to JR Cigars.com. All return freight charges will be passed on to the consumer.

7- All shipments Freight on Board (FOB) Burlington, NC. Risk of loss is on the buyer during transport and shipment.

Rates are subject to change without notice.

Re: ups surcharge

I don't know anything about the surcharge situation.

I've ordered a few things from JR and thought $3.50 to have a box shipped was pretty cheap.

The problem is with shipping charges on multiple items.

Ex. 1 box is shipped for $3.50. 4 - 5 packs shows $11.00.

Buy more than 1 item, they increase shipping charges more than most of the other vendors I use.

Re: ups surcharge

UPS does charge a fuel surcharge and it's based on the price per gallon for diesel fuel. It is figured into your rate and is adjusted monthly. Below is the current rate cut and pasted from the UPS site.

Current Fuel Surcharge Rate for Package Services:

Ground
Through August 2, 2009: 2.75%
Effective August 3, 2009: 3.50%

I like free shipping as much as anybody else. But when I can order a box of Cigars shipped for 3.50 and have them in 2 days as opposed to 7 for 6.50 which is the better deal? What JR is doing is adding the 1.00 to their 2.50 if you use UPS. You can pick regular mail for 2.50 but when will it show up at your door?

Re: ups surcharge

I would rather go with USPS anyways. When I order things from CBID and they are shipped USPS I get them in 3 days at most, if they are shipped UPS I have to wait almost a week or more.

I work for UPS and am pretty sure I have heard of an increase of $$ for fuel. However, I think they shouldn't pass that onto their customers. They should just give the customer an honest, flat price.

Re: ups surcharge

By the way, from CI you can pretty much get free shipping all the time. There are free shipping links floating around these boards. Ive made about 6 orders from them and have yet to pay any shipping.

And, that's what we do. When you ship UPS, we give you a flat price. Nothing is added to that after the sale. Look at your reciepts. UPS shows one price. That's what you pay. FedEx receipts will show an add-on fuel surcharge.

Gentlemen, like anything else, you have to "shop around". UPS is often cheaper and faster to ship goods than any other. In some cases, the good ole post office beats us, hands down. It comes down to weight and region.

On the other hand, lets say you live in VA. Lets say you order from CI. You get your package the next day with UPS. USPS can take five.

Just like shopping prices, we need to understand shippers.

Re: ups surcharge

Just to hijack this thread a little. I refuse to deal with any vendor that will exclusivly ship UPS from the US to me in Canada. UPS assigns a HUGE customs and brokerage fee to any international shipments. For example, I bought a nice piece of chrome dress-up for my sport car. The cost to me was $33 US (including shipping). When the nice UPS driver arrived at my door he had an invoice for over $50 for their "services" to process the shipment through customs. This is over and above the $33 I already put on my credit card. These guys are notorious for this overcharging. I have not encountered this with FedEx or other couriers. Even Canada Post has realistic customs and brokerage fees.
